Hi donna,
Sometimes it is the thread. Even when it is brand new sometimes it is old lying around a factory too long. Or check the needle, some designs are so thick when you get to the details, it just breaks the threads if you don't change it out.

And lastly... alas some designers aren't the greatest and the design is too much thread in one spot to be a good design.

Puppy--you can do applique, paper piecing, traditional piecing. Whatever method works for you is fine!

I'm keeping an eye on this swap and will see if I have enough time to join. Donna, those bird blocks are the cutest things I've seen

Maggie-for paper piecing, I'd say leave the papers on. It keeps things a bit more stable when sewing other blocks around it.
