I use a ping pong table for sandwiching, iron, and cutting. It is the perfect size. I will replace it with a 10 by 8 foot piece of 3/4 inch plywood and cubbies from Ikea when the time comes. I will paint the plywood and round the corners slightly.

Go big. My sewing table has extensions that are hinged. So when I'm working on smaller projects/blocks I don't swing out the extensions. But they sure come in handy once I'm putting borders on and quilting. At that point I move the table (it's on casters) into the middle of the room and put all the extensions into place

The top piece is cut from a 4ft X 8ft and i,m not sure if a 4 x 8 table is to big .Or I could make it like 4 x 6 ft .
Is a 4 x 6 ft table as big as I will need.
Or do as they say go big or go home.

Thanks
Tom
I do not think it is too big
I have a table that is 2' by 6' with an attached, hinged, 2' by 6'. Though it has hinges, it never is folded down.
There is 3 ' on the left of my machine and 2' on the right
( I rounded all these measurements to the nearest 6 inches.)
Also, there is a cabinet to the left that is all drawers and I have a board, my husband says it is 1/8" floor under layment, that goes on top of the open drawer making a support for large quilts
If you have the room for the 8', go 8'!

I would make it as big as your room can handle. I don't think you can have too much table space. Good for so many tasks. You can also use it for multiple machines or cutting station or ironing station. I would love to have more room for a bigger table. Only thing they are a catch-all! lol

As you can see, we all agree with the bigger the better - the idea about making a fold down/up part is a good recommendation if you need to conserve space some of the time, yet you have the flexibility of more space if needed. Post pictures of what you end up with, we're all interested to see!

If you make the table for a machine to sit down in, be sure to save the cut-out piece because one day you will want to use the entire table for a large quilt project and the hole will hamper your work. Your large size sounds yummy! Mine is about 6 x 3.5'; all the room I have to work with.

Thanks every one .
I,m going to go 4ft X 6ft and then I have added a 2ft drop is can be 4ft x 8ft.
Is it ever big Now I can have a nap down stairs when i,m quilting lol
I put metal on all the edges so I can use a speed square on it for my cutting.
And nice with the wheels on it . So easy to move .
One thing i,m Not sure about I,m going to cut a opening for my sewing machine and wondering how far it should be from the front of the table ?
Would like to finish it tomorrow.

And boy do I have a lot of storage space now.
Thanks
Tom

I have 2 tables to work on,, 8ftx8ft. I use this one for laying out blocks when ready to put quilt together. I also have my old Kenmore sewing machine built into this table. I also have a 4x6 table to work from by my display wall. I have a stand up cutting area. And a desk level counter with 2 Brother sewing machines. Which I find I use alot more then on the big table. Also I have lanament wood flooring, easy clean up and easy on the eye to find dropped articles....
