Inheiriting talent and other awesome my Mom bragging :).
Fast forward a few years an we are in the age of information and youtube. I finally had a way to learn so I watched as many videos as I could, downloaded the sewing machine manual and taught myself to sew. With this skill I could do my dream of making a quilt. I choose to make a gift for my best friend as an xmas gift of a purple quilt as that is her fav color.
I showed my Mom and she was just blown away by the job I did on it. For days she was bragging on me and just floored at what I accomplished. She than said that my other crafting anyone can do, but Quilting was something you had to be talented at. Here is the good part. Finally she says to me, " I don't know why I couldn't believe that you would be so good at that, you do take after me" I just had to laugh. She has now taken credit for my abilities.
My original post was showing the table topper that she made me so I could have my sewing machine flush with the table to hold the quilt. After she made that she decided to come help me clean out and organize my spare room into a quilting/crafting studio. My husband and I own a small condo which is pretty much a glorified apartment so the rooms are smallish and there isn't space for storing things like if we had a garage, basement, or attic. Everything just gets piled high in the spare room so you can barely move or walk in except to throw more junk in there.
Her initial aim was just to get me a space to sew so I could move out of the living room with all my quilting items. While discussing it with her before we began working I told her about this thread and all the awesome Quilting spaces that the members here have. I showed her photos and told her that these were my dream rooms that maybe someday I could have one too. The response to that has me in state of disbelief. Someone please pinch me lol.
My husband just got a credit card to Home Depot, as we were planning on buying my Mother some woodworking tools for Christmas and had wanted to get her better than just the cheapest ones. ( we feel that you need to have the best tools you can afford for any project) My husband handed over the credit card and told us to buy what we needed. With an aside that it didn't mean the sky was the limit lol.
My Mom used inspiration from so many of the board members posts and off we went. We spent most of the day yesterday putting together the cube systems for the wall to wall storage. We also got a hanging workshop light to put over my work areas so I can see well with a natural light light bulb. I Also got an interesting large slippery piece of building material to put on the sewing tables so the quilt can slide as I sew it.
I owe not only a huge thanks to my Mother and Husband but to all the Quilters here on the boards. We aren't finished yet but I can show a few photos of the space and our work in progress.
Starting behind the door and working my way around (please keep in mind its a mess as its a work in progress. Once we finish I'll post final photos:

I love what your mom has made for you. I have been thinking I needed something similar, and your picture has spurred me on to do something about it. What I'm using right now is okay, but what you have is GREAT.
Thanks.
