I just ordered a pack of 100 comic book backings for $11.25 with free shipping on Amazon for those
of you who are considering folding and organizing your fabrics. Thought this was a good buy. They
are silvertoned and also come in paks of 200 for about $5 more.

You read my mind, I was just thinking the same thing...

Its the cardboard that is inserted into plastic bags for vintage comic books......supposed to be acid free. I ordered 100 the other day and begin wrapping my stash..almost used up all of them and need more. I only wrap uncut fat quarters, then 1/2 yd to 2yds. Less than fat qtr I fold and put in tray, more than 2 yds I fold and put in shelves.

Thanks for the description. I guess I must not have this much material. I just got another shelf today. Tomorrow I will be busy. I am taking material out of bins. I need to see it togather to know what I might want to complete a project. I have a nice spacious sewing room in the basement. I have to be sure to have good light. Sometimes for a final choice I will bring the material up stairs for the natural light. :thumbup: Rowena101

I always cut cardboard boxes from purchases into 6" x 10" boards to wrap fabric and place on bookshelves. It difinately makes it easier to find what I want and it repurposes the cardboard.

IF you can find a local comic book store, they might carry the boards. IF they do, they're price is usually less than online pricing.

Went through 200 boards - going to get 200 more tomorrow.

I have been using the thin styrofoam boards from Walmart that start as big boards. I cut them to size, then wrap fabric around them. We do not have a comic book store nearby. I would have to go to Houston for one, but I am thinking about ordering some. I will need a lot more of either to wrap all or most of my fabric. I takes time to cut the boards and I could be sewing and finishing a quilt I have started that is on my fleece design wall!

to the ladies putting their fabric, other quilters who know say that the cardboard [regular] has acid in it and will ruin your fabric. Maybe they will be along to tell you.

I got some a while ago and went through them all in an hour. I'll find the ones you mention and continue on. I am really happy with this method the boards are holding up well! I move them in and out of my storage cabinet and they are easy to put back. The cabinet is visible in the guest/sewing room so it looks much nicer to have the fabric set up like books.

Neat Idea. Thank you for sharing... I currently have a four ft wide six foot high shelf full of large bins of fabric sorted by color. That's the best I can do at the moment :)

I am still wrapping fabric but I love the look of the fabric on the boards. They stand like books...supporting each other on shelves. It is so much easier to see what you have and it doesn't wrinkle as much when it's wrapped instead of piled under something else. (Sounds like I sell the boards, doesn't it? :) Actually, they are acid free, already cut, and very sturdy. I'm pleased with the result. I only wrap 1/2 yd and up and even then I put two on a board..both visible. Fat quarters are still folded and put in baskets, etc. As I mentioned before, 200 are less than $20 on the Amazon link with no shipping costs. Forgot to mention that I'm also putting the amount of yardage pinned to the end of the fabric so I don't have to unwind it to know how much I have. It takes a little more time but I feel it will be worth it in the long run. I'm using little square Post Its and silver safety pins.

I stopped at the comic book store on my way home from swimming today, and got 100 comic book boards for $15. I spent the afternoon folding and wrapping, and cleared up several shelves! I have so much room now, I have to get more stash! : )

I'm going to have to stop and see if the local comic book store can get some of those for me. Thanks for the advice! I'm about to go on a 9mth maternity leave so that should give me some time to fold everything in my stash.

If you just Search comic book backings all the options will come up. The silver ones I mentioned are not silver in color. That's just a variety. I am really pleased with the look and the process. Enjoy. :0

so are they thick enough? do they bend/bow?

I am on my 4th package of comic boards. If you have larger yardages, ULine has a great size (8 1/2 x 11) of foam board availabe for 70 cents each that really work well and make good bracers on the shelves as well. I need to order more Ulines.

OK, now this price sounds better. Someone yesterday said she purchased them 10 for 100 and she had at least a few shelves full. I had been thinking to myself that with my stash (I call it a stash) the boards would cost more than the fabrics. I was thinking I must really be poor because I not only can't afford a stash like alot on here have but also can't afford the boards to put it on. Now for this price I could so see it. Thank you; I feel much better now.

I just searched online and found this place to order the comic boards from and they have a store about 30 miles from my house. I am searching and finding and storing links here for all of us to enjoy.

There was a whole thread of many, many pages about this a few weeks ago. Don't know how you missed it. Do a search and you will find all the info you could ever want to know about comic book boards.

I went to the comic store in Green Bay, WI. and checked out the backings and they were way to thin to hold up the fabric. I don't know what the other backings look like, but I didn't buy those for sure..

I don't have tons of yardage. Usually the biggest pieces I have are about 3 yds or so and it holds them fine (the ones I got) but you won't find the boards to be thick and heavy like the fabric boards that yardage is on at your quilt shop. Once you start wrapping it around it just holds up itself. I stack them like standing books and so far haven't had any trouble. I'm on my second hundred now and I'm NOT buying fabric until a lot of this stash is used. :0

I had to order more because I'm not close to a comic book store. Amazon still has them for $11.72 with free shipping.

None of mine have bowed. Yes, they're thin but they seem to hold 3 yards okay.

I got a package of these today from teh comic book place. 115 peices for $10 I thought that was a pretty sweet deal. I'm excited start folding and organizing.

Can anyone tell me if the boards are similar in strength or thickness to the plastic boards sold by Polar Notions? Is the board thicker than card stock type paper one would but at a craft store? I have used Polar Notions and woman in my craft group saw them and went to a nearby plastic manufacturer and had boards cut by them. Still came to about a $1.00 a board though!

Wow. $1 a board is pricey, don't you think? My boards from Hobbies Depot are not really thick but they're doing the job. They are 24 pound weight...heavier than card stock but not foamboard weight or thickness. They are 71/2X 11 or so far I have no complaints.

I have used 300 of the comic book boards and am thrilled by the nice way all my fabric is organized. I am using them for border fabric and bindings. It is nice to have the binding ironed and neatly folded around the comic book board with the length and any extra pieces of fabric tucked underneath.

We found the cheapest place to get them is a comic book store. The clerks are really funny about all the quilters coming in to their stores now.

I got some strange looks when I walked in the store, but they weren't so bad. I think I was the first girl in there for a while. The guy did ask if that was the right size for my books and I just said oh i'm not using it for comic books, i have another use for them i just need the acid free cardboard and left it at that. I did make my husband park out front so he could look in since it was a little weird being the only girl in there.

I have used Polar Notions and love them, but they are very pricey. I have thought about getting the comic backings but because my sewing studio is in the basement I was afraid that they wouldn't hold up to dampness. Now I do have a dehumidifier down there that runs when it needs to and I don't feel that my basement is damp. My question is-will the comic book backings hold up in a basement? Will they bend, warp or whatever from the basement air? What are your thoughts?

Sandi, if there is enough moisture in the basement sewing room to damage the boards, it would be rusting your equipment and mildewing your fabric. The comic book boards should be just fine. My husband has his books in our basement and runs a dehumidifyer all summer and they are fine.

The boards I got have a nice slick finish and work great.
