First Post: Craft/Sewing Room - The Before Pictures

Above you can see that the carpet was installed, as well as the closet and corner shelf doors. I wasn't expecting that he would put a door on the corner cabinets - I had thought it was going to be open shelving. One less thing to keep neat! He started on the cabinets today. All the pot lights are now installed.

The cabinets will have a space in between them for a chair. There will be a countertop that spans the entire length of the cupboards. There is going to be under-cabinet lighting as well. I'm going to put my sewing table under the window. Check out the sewing room inspector in the foreground.

I'm going to ask him to reverse the location of the bottom cabinets, so that I have the drawer cabinet closest to the chair opening. You can see that the upper cabinet has not yet been hung. I can only have one upper here as the bulkhead for the duct work is in the way. He's going to put open shelves there instead of a second upper cabinet.

On this side, you can see that the lower drawers are right next to the chair opening, which is where I want them on both sides.

I haven't been doing any quilting for over a week. I have two tops ready to pin baste and I'm waiting until I have room to set up my tables so that I can clamp the backing, batting and top to it and pin. Right now I don't have room to set up the tables. I don't really want to start anything new as I would really have to dig to get at my stash for my next project. So now we wait. I'm hoping that maybe this weekend I can start putting things away in the cupboards.

Your sewing room is going to be near perfect. Well thought out and well put together. Can hardly wait to see it complete!

Brandi 02-14-2012 05:49 PM

It is going to be beautiful. I know you can't wait to get it finished. I love it.

slk350 02-14-2012 07:33 PM

Great looking room. Where did you get the cabinets on wheels. I've been looking for those kind of white cabinets at local Home Depot and Lowes. Couldn't find them.

amyjo 02-14-2012 08:38 PM

You can buy the wheels and have them put on any cabinet you want. Just look in the automotive section for the wheels. I have some that I am waiting on my DSIL to help me with. Probably be this summer. Bought the ones that with go completely around (swivel type) they are a little spendy but you can make your own shelving and put them on cheaper than buy standard cabinets.

That is looking so nice. Look forward to the finished area, and you at your sewing machine.

psychonurse 02-15-2012 03:38 AM

patimint 02-15-2012 12:35 PM

Looking sooo good. So envious, but so happy for you. This may have already been asked, but did you do all the planning on this room by yourself? Bet you can't wait to get to work in there. Won't be long now.

Patti Mahoney 02-15-2012 05:07 PM

I like your fuzzy helper in the second picture. LOL We used to have a lab-shepherd mix dog that would steal the tools of ANY repairman that entered the house. Once the plumber was in the basement and his tools started to disappear and he thought we were stealing his tools. I assured him it was the dog and I don't think he believed me until we were standing in the back of the basement and his tools were in the front of the basement and he saw the dog walk over, take a tool and go upstairs to her bed. He hid them under his bed, lol.... The plumber did retrieve all of his tools before he left....Sooooo funny! ! !

paulettepoe 02-15-2012 05:57 PM

how blessed you are!!! Enjoy.

Helen6869 02-15-2012 06:10 PM

I can't remember if you told us or not but I'm wondering what kind of carpet you have put down. It looks really nice. Curious about why you didn't put hardwood or tile of some kind. Thanks!

Yes, I did, although there were some suggestions along the way from the companies that came in to do the quotes that were incorporated. And I read a lot of posts on this board to see what other people had in their sewing rooms and how they were configured. Although, Murphy's Law, I am sure that once I start using it, I will realize that I forgot some fundamental thing! I've already realized that I am going to have to raise the TV higher so that I can see it through the window. I'll probably have to mount it on the wall as opposed to leaving it on the stand where it is now. I'll show everyone that stuff when it's all done.

Patti, that is hillarious! Sounds like your pooch was quite a character! :-)

Ginny B 02-15-2012 06:25 PM

Wow, it's been great watching the progress. You must be so very excited at the prospect of getting all your stuff back in there and being able to actually enjoy your new space. Looks wonderful.

Helen, it's a beige berber, and I have it in the rest of my basement as well as on the stairs and in the kid's bedrooms. The main floor and the master bedroom have hardwood. I've been doing all my sewing and scrapbooking in the dining room (hardwood) and I hate cleaning up the little bits of paper and thread on the wood floor. My dog walks through the dining room, or I do, and the little bits scatter everywhere, into the living room, kitchen, etc., and I end up having to vaccum the entire main floor. So this was the primary reason that I opted for carpet in the new sewing room - little bits will stick to the carpet and stay in one place! Also, I live in Canada, and it gets cold here in the winter, and the hardwood floors get cold. So carpet in the basement is a lot warmer. If I ever build another new house or renovate one, I'll put heating under the ceramic in the kitchen. OMG it gets cold in the winter!!!

kacy 49 02-15-2012 08:02 PM

Room is looking great. Love the shelves and cabinets and storage.

cousinpenny 02-16-2012 03:34 AM

My poodle hid his Oreos in my sleeping bag until one night. I went to slip my feet in and felt something cold and wet. Sure enough, he'd hid his treat in there. When I screamed, he came up looked at me tilted his his head and proceeded to pull out the cookie. I slept in a northfacing bedroom (in the Midwest) so in the cold late 70's winters I'd sleep in my sleeping blanket (flannel lining) with quilts on top. My family treated the dog as well as me....he even had to have his tonsils out to cure his winter hacky cough.

JanieH 02-16-2012 04:45 AM

Fantastic! I love seeing it all come together!

mrsponcho1 02-16-2012 07:42 AM

Yes, ceramic heating would be great where you are. I am in a much warmer climate so the hardwoods would probably not be as cold. But I do like berber. When we carpeted the familyroom/kitchen I couldn't find any berber. I really wanted it and wish I had held out for it. I put in a semiplush and of course, it has multiple spots on it now from foods dropped, muddy shoes, etc. Will look for berber again. it just wears so well. I love your room. I know you are excited to be in there. Thanks for sharing it with all of us.

Dreams do come true! It's amazing to me that you had a vision of what you're winding up with when I look at your first pictures. You're truly a very practical artist!
