Design Wall At Last!

1 Attachment(s)
Boy am I excited about this! I followed THIS excellent tutorial at Oh Fransson and got my 1" foam insulation boards at Home Depot.

The boards are 4' x 8'... I trimmed mine down 10" to lean up against this short wall in my quilting room. I used Warm & White batting.

Can't wait to start filling it up!

Here is a picture of the back as I'm putting on the duct tape after stapling the batting down.

That's exactly what I want to do!

KalamaQuilts 07-23-2013 04:45 PM

My quilts got a 1000 times more interesting and original once I had my working wall in place.
Great job!

I love my wall also!!!

meanmom 07-24-2013 04:17 AM

I love my design wall. A friend gave me her old design wall when she got a bigger one. I was ready to buy the stuff to make it and asked my friend a few questions about how she made hers. She said instead of buying one I could have hers as her DH was in the process of making her a bigger one. I was the perfect size for my space. I don't know how I got along without it. It is so much better than my design floor I was using.

Joset 07-24-2013 04:38 AM

yup that is what i use too.

tessagin 07-24-2013 05:18 AM

I want to do that. One of these days. Right now I use the flannel backed table cloths and skirt hangers. I'm working on a couple designs that I am able to make portable. BUT I still want one of these walls.

mjhaess 07-24-2013 06:59 AM

Great job...Looks great...

jbj137 07-24-2013 07:56 AM

Good job!!!!!

asimplelife 07-24-2013 08:26 AM

It was really easy to make... about 90 minutes from start to finish! I threw my batting pieces into the dryer for about 20 minutes to get rid of the wrinkles from being on the roll and they were easy to stretch while warmish too.

NanaCsews2 07-24-2013 08:30 AM

Looks fantastic! Exactly what I used. We used screws with large plastic white washers to attach to the wall. Isn't it great having a large design wall to use for more than one project?

Chasing Hawk 07-24-2013 08:52 AM

Fabulous job! I love my design wall.

wolph33 07-24-2013 09:41 AM

Quiltlady330 07-24-2013 10:43 AM

Very nice. Great size, too.

caspharm 07-24-2013 12:24 PM

Great job! I may try the adjustable one that weasier22 made on a different thread.

This is great! Thank you for sharing!!!

Thank you for posting this. Your wall is great! Good job!

I have rigid insulation for my design wall, but the color is blue and white would be better. I've been thinking about encasing it in a flannel covering so I can use both sides. (It leans against one short wall wall and continues around the corner in front of a double door, half of which I don't use. There are two pieces.) But I like your idea better. If I got a king size batting, I could probably cover one side of each piece. Thank you!

cashs_mom 08-01-2013 10:12 AM

I used the foam batting to make a design wall, too. It works great! Mine, however, is not as fancy as yours. I had no instructions and just walked around Home Depot until I found something that would work. I bought 2 pieces, took them home and just covered them with off white flannel, pulled around and stapled on the back. Yours looks much more professional! Good job!

I really need to quit procrasting and do this! I don't have a dedicated wall. I will have to make one that tucks behind a large cabinet and slide it out when I need it. Sure wish I had a permanent wall for one!

uniquedesigner 08-03-2013 07:52 PM

Great, I did me one like this but I used flannel. They are great. I do not know what I did with out one.

Mariposa 08-08-2013 07:07 AM

Great job and congrats on your new design wall! :)

qbquilts 08-08-2013 08:56 AM

Thanks for the link to the instructions. I really want to make one. Right now I'm using a vinyl/flannel backed table cloth pinned to the wall. But it would be really nice to have a portable design wall. Thanks again!

Joselake 08-28-2013 08:46 AM

Great idea and a little more solid. I just hung a flannel flat bed sheet on the wall and the material sticks to it.
Its cheep so I can spend my money on material :-)

I just used my design wall for the first time. Can't believe how great it is to arrange your blocks. For the first time I didn't have to re-iron seams to put the blocks together. Got it right the first time because of the block being on the wall.

stablemom 08-28-2013 11:36 PM

Thanks for the idea. I like your quilt you are working on!

Jenni M 08-29-2013 06:09 PM

I bet you just love it!

bjsmith57 09-02-2013 01:54 PM

Very nice idea - thanks for sharing

Suzette316 09-02-2013 02:42 PM

I made two of these the same way about five years ago and they are still going strong!! :) I love how light weight and portable these design walls are. So glad you finally have yours as well!! :)

Oh, and I had to cut mine down a bit too, so I took the foam bit that was leftover, covered it with some batting and made a mini design wall that holds a block or two to take to my sewing machine. This little thing comes in handy more than I would have thought! :)

Alexandra 09-03-2013 10:25 AM

Great design wall. I need a moving one.

PecksPieces 09-03-2013 05:45 PM

I just did a search for pvc pipe portable design wall and found several sites with directions to build a 32 or 24 inch wall.

I thought I would do an update on how having a design wall has changed my sewing habits. For the last month or so I have used the right wall for a leader/ender UFO and have actually assembled 3 UFOs into flimsies in this way (almost magically!).

The left wall is used for my main project and has helped to bring 2 UFOs and one WIP to the flimsy stage.

As you can see, I've got 2 more UFOs that are being assembled this week. It is so motivating to me to fill up the wall! Sewing blocks and putting them in a pile is no where near as exciting as putting them up on the wall. I just love seeing the progress and how easy it is to flip the blocks whenever I see something instead of having to clear the floor, lay them out, rearrange for a few days and then worry about messing them up during assembly (which I seem to have a special talent for!).

So yes, I am LOVING these walls. I just had no idea how much they would change my productivity for the better. Plus they add so much color to my quilting room... I should have leaned them up against shelves, a closet or anywhere years ago!
