Does your sewing space look like mine?

I got some shots of my sewing space while I am working in it, well you can't see me.lol Does yours look messy like mine? I am still trying to figure out how to get the most use out of my space. These photos are just a corner of my room of 24x26' where I do the sewing. I have fabric and a long arm machine and tons of stuff everywhere else. This is my space. I was finally able to start from scratch when I had a little unexpected 'help' (a water leak). I have finally figured out how to move my space around so I can get halfway organized. Almost everything I have is one wheels now so it's easy to rearrange if the mood hits. Sounds like you have lots of fun stuff and a pretty big room to boot.

And I bet you can find everything you need. :D

Kim Bohannon 12-17-2011 07:38 PM

actually, that doesn't look so bad... I have seen much worse!

krista 12-17-2011 08:41 PM

I wish my space looked like this. I only have a little corner with my stuff in totes and bags! I have no advise on organizing it since I don't have any organizational skills. Good luck creating amazing pieces.

-It looks pretty good to me -I lost my cat in mine yesterday-kept hearing a muffled meow- I found the poor thing in a basket under scads of fabric I was sorting thru-so I spent the day cleaning and re-arranging with Tommy Girl's help so I'm now out of the cat house (temporarily)

Gramie bj 12-17-2011 10:12 PM

Yours looks spotless compared to mine! LOL

sewbeadit 12-18-2011 12:57 AM

Your space is lovely, I think I have seen it before and I love that movable design wall you have.

Looks just about right to me LOL

jitkaau 12-18-2011 04:00 AM

Mine's more crowded.

mama lyn 12-18-2011 05:41 AM

A messy studio is the sign of a creative mind! That's my motto and I'm sticking to it! :-)

matraina 12-18-2011 06:37 AM

Did you sneak into my room last night?

Annaquilts 12-18-2011 06:55 AM

I don't think it is too bad. the only thing I would have a hard time is the stuff on the sewing table. It looks like everything has a place eventhough not overly organized.

Looks more like a Studio, love it,Wish it was mine, lol.

jbj137 12-18-2011 08:37 AM

Yep that is mine. J J

Quilter2B 12-18-2011 08:50 AM

Wish mine was as big; I've got mine all crowded into a 9 x 12 room; ah, maybe next year I'll be able to set my quilting frame all the way up (but thankful it is designed so that I can at least do twin sizes).

Debby54 12-18-2011 09:40 AM

Your space it neat as compared to mine. I can't wait until after Christmas so I can tear it apart and reorganize

adrianlee 12-18-2011 11:45 AM

I think your space looks pretty good. I spent 3 months this past summer/fall getting my sewing back in order. I watched a "Hoarders" show and that really got me going on cleaning up my creative mess. I need hubby to add more lightings since I moved the sewing/cutting table. I have my fabrics in bins, for each color and 2 theme bins. Finally got all my patterns and binders in 3 boxes. I'm hoping I get shelves this comming summer.

great aunt jacqui 12-18-2011 12:59 PM

Yes that whole space is mine, please return it ASAP.

Marilyn Philips 12-18-2011 02:51 PM

What a fabulous space and so well organized. I am making the doggie quilt you have for my great grandson who is not quite 2 and loves animals.

No mine doesn't look like yours, couldn't in a million years. Okay I confess, not at the moment it couldn't because mine is in the middle of a building site (I am serious) but one day, who knows?

BettyGee 12-18-2011 05:55 PM

When I'm working on a big project my area looks very much like yours and I think it is just fine. I know where everything is and I'd be willing to bet you do too. I was doing Christmas gifts yesterday and mine looked like a tornado had gone through, today it looks much more normal. I like your working area just fine.

leakus 12-18-2011 08:04 PM

Mine is a very small bedroom, at times all my surfaces are covered with stuff, projects, notions, fabrics, boxes with thread or beads, etc. the bad thing is the more cluttered it is the less motivation I have to sew. So, if you still have surfaces, you are good!

sewbeadit 12-18-2011 11:07 PM

Thank you BettyGee, I do try and clean it up between projects, if I don't I can't find anything or get anything done, since I have had one project after another all at once for the holidays, it has been kind of continuous. I could never have a really neat tidy spot because I don't work that way. I am still sorting and finding and trying to find better ways to store my stuff, that you can't see in the pics, which are behind where I was standing, my long arm and totes of fabric, etc. One day I will get it done. We moved during the spring and really aren't all moved in yet or unpacked, all the way.

Leakus, I too had a very small bedroom. Well it started as a front porch we turned into a sewing room, I loved it, was my first real sewing room, well after about 5 years I outgrew that, then I had about an 8x10 sewing room which was wonderful and I outgrew that after so many years, well we just moved in the late spring out of a two story house with a basement into a one story house and a big 24x26 shop, which I got for my studio. WEll I just turned 60 and what I am saying is hang in there one day you may have a bigger space too. Kids grow up so fast and things change before you even know what is happening. I never thought I would be able to have a room where I had everything for my hobby, quilting and sewing, in one room. I am still so excited, I am like a kid!

Love this quote and I agree with 100%. Of course, my sewing space is always messy but it's the way I work. No apologies.

SandyQuilter 12-19-2011 07:28 AM

You copied my room! And I use the entire master bedroom!

Hey, creative clutter central! Makes me feel right at home...

quiltapillow 12-19-2011 12:10 PM

OH, My, Yours looks bettttter than mine................I assure you. My room is 13x12. but a separate 8x15 for my long arm.

Michellesews 12-19-2011 12:35 PM

One of my "projects" of late is to make more storage/sewing space. I have gone vertical....I used to have my sewing machine/serger with a wall behind and realized if I moved those to the window, I could use the entire wall. I purchased some Azar peg boards from amazon.com and they are the best thing going....at least for me. I now have what I need at the cutting table, what I need at the sewing machine...but i have to be careful not to travel with tools...I am bad about that, and then they end up somewhere they should not be. I have tried to set up "zones"...cutting zone, pressing zone, sewing/serging zone, etc. They I purchased some plastic boxed with snap on lids, they are about 18 inches high and 9 inches across, nice size and will stack well. Each one has a different color of scraps in it....now I am waiting for my thread racks to arrive and that should help as well. It is always a work in progress it seems. But any vertical wall space is prime pickings!

rusty quilter 12-19-2011 04:12 PM

What ever space you have...is a good space! I too have a 1222--love it! I hope your creativity soars!

patdesign 12-19-2011 04:19 PM

OOOOH I want to come and play at your house. My sewing room is only 11 x 11, forget getting a long arm in, but it is packed to gills and I need more space. Been here over 26 years and retired, so theres no new big room in my future. Im just glad to have a sewing room instead of 2 guest rooms.:)

ladyshuffler 12-19-2011 10:57 PM

Very nice work space.............May I ask where you got your QUILT letters from???

Mine looks a lot worse than yours most of the time.

I could be transplanted into your sewing space. Mine is so similar it is scary.

Yep I think I am with you on that. Once in a while I like to clean up all the fuzzy stuff!

sewbeadit 12-20-2011 09:40 PM

Jere, that is too funny. I should have turned around and show the rest, but it is too unsorted to take a picture.lol Can't let that out on the net for everyone to see. One time I won second for the messiest bead room in our group.lol

I agree with you Michellesews on the vertical space. I have my sewing tables against the wall too, one day I may change that. I am looking for good ideas for sure. Having only moved in a few months ago and then starting on Christmas sewing I haven't had a lot of time to really think of what to do. I like the vertical thinking. I also have a cutting table behind where I sit at the sewing machine and a table with a studio cutter on it next to that. I am trying to fit some more bookcases/storage cases behind maybe the studio table. I still want others to be able to come and sew with me so need to leave a spot for them:)

I don't know if you can see the wire containers, I love them 15" square, black so I only see the fabric. They contain things so well and the piles do not fall into each other. I got mine at Target and put several sets together using cable ties, which Target did not have.
