Finally a Way to Store My Machine Needles

2 Attachment(s)
I have struggled with finding an efficient and easy way to store my sewing machine needles and I finally solved this dilemma. I found these small containers packaged in sets of 8 at the dollar store. As you can see, they fit perfectly in the red container and the labels are easy to read. You can fit from a 4 to 6 packages of needles in one container. I have them in a drawer right under my sewing machine. Works great. If I change needles but want to keep the one I remove, I can put it in the container.

All I can say is that drawer is entirely too neat! Great storage idea for any of our small items. Thanks.

I store mine in small tins with hinged lids. I write on the top what the needle is inside.

Those are great! Was it a Dollar Tree store? That's what we have around here. :)

Donna! I believe it was Family Dollar.

This is great, but don't you have to keep used needles separate from new needles, so you know which is which? I have never found a good way to store slightly used needles.

petmomful 10-11-2013 02:15 PM

I also hate all those loose bobbin thread tails! Have tried putting a tiny hair elastic over them, but that is too much work! lol

My "new" needles are in the cases that they were packed in i.e. Schmetz. The used needle that I placed "loose" in the container was only used for a short while to top stitch. I believed it to still be worth keeping so I put it in the large container but not back in it's original container. Hope this makes sense.

Great! Oh boy did I want to reach into the screen last night and grab one. I couldn't find one until I started acting like a chipmunk.

I love this. Mine are in a tin but I have to rifle through it to find the one I need. I'll have to take a trip to the family dollar store today.

A needle book is a great way to store slightly used machine needles. Just label the sizes on each felt page with a sharpie... Works for me...

gale 10-30-2013 09:33 PM

I've had no luck looking for these at family dollar or dollar general. If anyone finds them at a store, please share what store it was. Maybe stores' inventory differs in different areas.

nunnyJo 10-31-2013 04:51 AM

great idea, going to do this today.

Gale! I originated this thread and when I get back up to the Family Dollar store in Wisconsin where I purchased these boxes, I will check to see if they still have them. If they do, I would be happy to purchase them for you and send them to you. If this is agreeable with you, please PM me and send me your address. Yolanda Wood River

Now, go back to the store a purchase the package of pony tail wraps. They fit around the bobbins perfect and keeps the threads from tangling or unrolling.

That's a great idea. Unfortunately, my DGD are very curious in my sewing room so I've had to do a bit more 'hiding' of my sharps. They are in plastic chewing gum containers. All the different sizes containers are stored in a plastic 3-drawer shelf on the bookshelf beside my machine. When they are older I maybe able to leave things out or within reach but for now, that's what I have to do.

zennia 11-15-2013 03:02 AM

Thank You for the answer to one of my problems. I will look for these containers next time I shop.

mariatherese 11-15-2013 03:14 AM

Sometimes (quite often actually) I wish this board would have a "like-button". I just wanted to say that I like to see how people have organized things. In sweden we have far smaller houses than the average american house. Eventhough I have my own sewing room (which is oh so luxurious still having kids in the house), it is probably far smaller than you would imagine. And I have to keep everything in here, from my computer to the gift wrapping supplies etc.

So needless to say (pun not intended), I always appreciate crafty storage and sorting ideas!

Thanks for sharing. Love this one.

Found them at the dollar tree tonight!! Thanks for the offer though-I didn't see it until tonight for some reason.

That is a neat idea. What I do with gently used machine needles: I thread a piece of thread thru the eye and put it back in the original pack. That way when I see the thread I know it has been used. I also have "penny" size sticky notes for each needle size that I stick to the top of the machine so I remember which needle I have in the machine.

What a great idea. I keep marking a piece of paper and then losing it. Thank you.

Love that idea. I even have threads lying around that would work perfectly for it.
