Flooring for sewing room

I am getting a brand new sewing room and am concerned about what kind of flooring I can use (besides vinyl or tile) that I can use and not have it be scuffed from rolling my chair on it. We are using allure flooring in the rest of the house but I have read in the book that comes with the flooring that you have to have rubber wheels. Can anyone advise please?

I have Pergo laminate flooring in mine and love it.

jollyquilting 09-21-2012 08:51 PM

I Have Pergo too and love it. I keep a rug under the chair because I am afraid I will fall and don't want the roller to go too fast for me. (I am handicapped and unsteady) It just gleams and is so easy to pick up thread and scraps.

I have hard wood floors and have no problem.

Amythyst02 09-22-2012 03:07 AM

Ceramic Tile, but my sewing room is in the eat in area of our kitchen. We never use it, so I took it over.

Old school oak floors here. (Circa 1950) I love them. The kids used to rollerblade on them with no problems!

I have hardwood floors and have no problems. Didn't want carpet because of the pins.

I remodeled my 2 car attached garage when I bought my Gammill Long arm sewing machine. I had a very low nap carpet installed and have not regretted it. It’s been down since 2005 and shows no wear under my 2 chairs and is very easy to clean.

I have laminate flooring in mine and love it! My office chair rolls really easy and does not scuff it up.

fleurdelisquilts.com 09-22-2012 07:14 AM

Well, I have painted concrete and do not recommend it. We enclosed the carport and eventually painted the concrete to make cleaning easier. It is easier, but it's not wonderful. So spend the money and go with "real flooring."

We just put laminate flooring in the sewing/office room. Love it, easy to clean, dust mop, and I have rubber wheels on my sewing chair no problems. Had a carpet before, wish I had done this a long time ago.

Grannyofseven 09-22-2012 11:10 AM

I have laminate floors and love them because the chair is easy to slide on and it is so easy to clean with all the threads and all.

teacherbailey 09-22-2012 03:57 PM

I have carpet but only use the long pins with yellow plastic heads. No problems seeing them, and they stick up out of the carpet. I've used it for 7-8 years now and it doesn't show wear from wheeled chairs....and this was cheap carpet! Just basic inexpensive low pile from Home Depot. I am not a shoes wearer in the house so it's warm and soft on my tootsies too.

I have hardwood floors in most of the house. I use wooden stools and have felt pads under everything. I bought two or three office type chairs and never found one that was comfortable to me.

Laminate flooring, love it!....

wildyard 09-22-2012 06:11 PM

I agree with loving the laminate flooring. So easy to sweep up!!

vondae 09-22-2012 06:54 PM

You might also check into bamboo or cork. Both wear great, easy to care for & last a long long time. But, laminate is cheaper & is easy to care for. We had it in our last house & we loved it. Just don't get to light a color Or to dark. Happy floor hunting.

bbharr1994 I am also going to turn my 2 car garage in to my quilting / craft room, do you have and information on how to do this I know to start I need to empty out the garage (it stores all my stuff right now) SSome people have mentioned about the cold and hot of the garage (mine is fully insulated except the 2 grage doors). I was thinking of putting up temporary wall in front of the garage doors. Can not fiqure out how to cover up the garage door opening mec that is on the celing so the oils do not drip on my quilting stuff. Can you and or anyone else that has ideas HELP I really want to get my room set up I am tired of having to always put my quilting away when I have guest or grandchildren come over. thank you yippie

I have hardwood and I haven't had a problem. The wood was installed and then there were several coats of poly put down. I haven't had a problem

lfletcher 09-24-2012 03:42 AM

I have laminate wood flooring in my quilt room and tile in my longarm room. Both work well. The reason for the tile instead of the laminate in my longarm room is because I have my washer and dryer in there and my husband said you are not suppose to put laminate in "wet" areas because it will warp if it gets wet.

RonieM 09-25-2012 04:11 AM

I have carpeting in my sewing room. I purchased a cheap floor mat at an office supply store to put on the floor under my chair. It seems like this would protect any type of flooring you decide to use.

BMP 09-25-2012 04:59 AM

Laminate, love it !!!

MdmSew'n'Sew 09-25-2012 11:18 AM

I have ceramic tile in my sewing room and could never imagine anything else in there, it's so easy to keep clean and things like pins don't get lost in a carpet or anything.

DebbE 09-26-2012 05:28 AM

Laminate flooring that looks like wood - but put a large area rug under my table and quilting area for comfort -- it feels good and my chair rolls over it easily....plus room for the pups to lay down nearby...

sylviak 09-27-2012 07:09 PM

I have low pile carpet in my shed, but I wish I had put laminate down instead. I use an office mat as well to keep my chair from leaving marks. I also have a spare vacuum cleaner that I use after each project to pick up the inevitable threads. My youngest son is a regional manager for a hardwood flooring company.....so I'm an idiot!!

Debbie C 09-28-2012 11:58 AM

I have my quilt room in the finished basement - completed with porcelain 12x12" tiles. Very easy on the rolling chair!

mrsponcho1 09-29-2012 11:34 AM

I have tile thru out my house. I have nothing under my sewing room chair but we put an office chair mat under the chair where our computer is. For some reason it would get caught and not roll - drove my dh crazy - but it really did not bother me. lol I love my tile - so easy to clean - wished I had put tile down years ago when the boys were still at home.

QuiltnNan 10-05-2012 03:30 AM

i recently installed engineered hardwood... i love it! my chair wheels have not marked it up so far. and it sweeps up so beautifully

DebbE 10-09-2012 06:21 AM

We laid a laminate in living room, dining and all bedrooms that looks like real wood, has slightly high/low spots - gorgeous. But I put a small very low loft area rug under my table & chair for warmth & so I wouldn't have to chase my foot pedal. Since I use the pins with yellow heads, I find those very easy. Am very happy with the choice. Have 18" tile in my hallways and family rm/kitchen and utility. But I still put down small area rugs under my sofa & coffee table and a runner in the kitchen, just for comfort. Very easy to clean, and comfortable. Either of those would be great.

We put laminate in the basement . It's been over 2 yrs and its holding up just fine . I use a rolling chair.

Is your concrete stained or just painted? I have plain concrete right now with carpet squares in strategic places but the plan is to stain the quilting room like the rest of the rooms. I think I want a low pile rug in my sewing machine/cutting/ironing area for comfort and coziness.

I've been reading all the posts. Laminate seems very popular. Has anyone used cork flooring? I have hardwood floors upstairs and my office rolling chair has marred the floor (guess I should sweep more often!) We have not finished the downstairs quilting room which is still unfinished concrete. Suggestions? Oh, I live out in the country with 3 dogs that go in and out. Is it hopeless to have nice floors??

nancy14418 06-23-2013 06:01 PM

I had Pergo in my last sewing room, the information said rubber wheels were necessary but I couldn't find any and wasn't going to not sew because of it. I never saw a mark on the floor with almost daily use for 4 years. The only thing that scratched the floor was when moving a bookcase that didn't get picked all the way up. Oh well stuff happens. Final word, don't worry about rubber wheels!

linda faye 06-23-2013 06:18 PM

Have had laminate flooring for five years. Wheels of office chair have not damaged floor at all. Extremely east to Swiffer up all the thread tails, etc. Love it!

Vera39760 06-24-2013 06:50 AM

My sewing room was originally my den. It has split brick. I love the floor. It is easy to keep clean. I do have problems with my chair rolling sometimes. We have hardwood floors through the rest of the house. I had my sewing room in one of the bedrooms,(I loved having the hardwood floors but worried about them getting scratched) but I hated having to bring customers through the house. The den is at the back door off of the carport so people don't can come straight into my sewing room.

Mariposa 06-25-2013 06:38 AM

I have carpet in my sewing room, with a mat under my sewing chair. Helps for warmth-due to physical needs. :)

*I'd suggest using "commercial grade" laminate. Does not scratch or dent like regular laminate can. I have it in my kitchen, and wouldn't have anything else!!

I have painted concrete in my basement studio. It's working ok but have only been using the space for a year. Not sure about the long term.

skyRose 08-14-2013 09:33 AM

It depends upon the choice and your needs.
You must clear you ideas and your requirements to get good results and suggestions here.
Mostly people like hardwood floor and it is quite good also.
But it mostly depends upon the own choice of man.

Idea. Put your temporary wall up 3 feet in. Add an door , you have an extra storage space and a free wall for design. Could you quilt a cover (Bag) line it with plastic and put over opening mec. put towel inside, check occasionally.
