How I sort my fabric
5 Attachment(s)
There are lots of threads asking about this all the time so I broke down and did a few pics of my working mess. Here are the shots of how I organize my fabric.
The shelves for the major part of the stash came from a fabric store that closed. They are about eight feet long and six feet high. The table is from the same store. It is 3 1/2'W x 8'L. Scraps by color right above the cutting table backing fabrics under the table. The LA in the far part of the room. Main fabric shelves by spectrum system. lower right area fir B&W and specials projects waiting at end of table and labled scraps projects being worked on but on hold, labled and under my small ironing table next to my DHM. Hope my casual organization helps some to not worry to much about being focused on tidy rather than quilting. peace |
Wow girl, that is quite a stash. You could open a store. Love your shelves.

Thanks for sharing - I love to see other's sewing rooms and stashes. Helps me to think about organizing mine . . .

I love your concept, and your stash. Sure wish I had a place to store my stuff like that.
|
Wow, can I come over and go shopping? You should be set for a while. I have a large stash, but yours makes mine look small. Love the shelves and the table sounds and looks great. Happy for you, ENJOY!...

I love the way you have it organised.
|
Beautifully organised. Mine's all over the place.
|
Now that's the kind of fabric stash I want to have! Well done!
|
I LOVE your cutting table!
|
nice stash.I would love to fondle it,lol.

Your organization makes sense to me...

Now that is a stash!!!!! I sort mine by color too, with some special boxes like 30's, civil war, thimbeberries, black/white, paisley, plaids/stripes (from shirts) - and then there are the stacks that don't have a home yet. I use plastic shoebox size boxes and when the lids don't fit anymore then it is time to raid the box for a quilt. I also store by size - 1.5, 2, 2.5 squares and now 2.5 strips. I don't purchase fabric unless it is for a specific project and since I do a lot of scrappy quilts, it is usually for borders/bindings/backs. All my stuff in boxes is pretty small - FQ or smaller - I really don't have yardage. I am green with envy!!!

Love it and what a stash you have, and I thought I had a lot. Great you have so much space too. Don't forget to show us some quilts.
|
Thanks for sharing - it's always good to see what others do - we can glean any ideas that will work for us! My room is always a work in progress. I'm now working on cutting 1 1/2, 1 1/2 and 2 7/8 inch strips and putting them in boxes. That certainly came in handy this week when I needed one more strip to finish the blocks for a quilt. I can either have a clean room or sew - can't have both!!

Wow...That is a lot of fabric....Good organization....
|
 wow, impressive -- my problem is just getting started on organizing!!
|
A wonderful stash. All ready to make some quilts. :)
|
Very nice room AND stash. My fabrics are still in totes, most sorted, measured and marked but no shelves to put them on yet. Thanks for sharing your awesome space.
|
When you posted you got your shelves from a fabric shop that closed - did those shelves have the fabric still on them? Because you seem to have enough fabric for a store.LOL
|
Terrific ideas for storage, and quite the stash!! Looks like you have plenty of room too! :)
|
did you buy out the store that was closing I could do some shopping with your stash
|
That is incredible how much material you have. Wow---I am impressed.
My stash of material is nothing like that and I have spent a fortune in mine. Can not imagine how much money you have invested in your material. Lucky you. How many quilts have you made? Would love for you to post some. |
Thanks everyone for being in awe of my stash. I have been collecting fabric now for the better part of fifteen years so all you new quilters out there, see what you have to look forward to!
Over these years I have made about onehundred quilts. I will never use all my fabric. I am sixty now. The only stuff I buy now is batting and thread and an occassional special fabric if I need it. HA. Thanks for looking. peace to all and make your week a good one |
Ube,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Know it must be exciting to have all that material. You have made so many quilts. I am in awe of that, also. Did you most of your material when that shop went out of business? Would love to see some of your quilts. |
I'm plum jealous of that stash!! I thought I had a lot but now I won't feel too bad when I can't resist that next 3 yard piece. Lovely, and so well assorted. nice looking machine ,too.
