I found the best idea for scrap storage

Well, one of many anyway. I was at Costco the other day and they have a small magazine stand so I always check for quilting magazines. Well, I found a great one. And first off I am in no way affiliated with the magazine publishers or anything like that. Anyway, the magazine is Quilt Your Stash and from the makers of Threads magazine.
http://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/...ilt-your-stash

The whole magazine is based on a plan to use up a lot of scraps in a systematic way and also to have them stored so they are more usable. i have not read the whole plan, but it started with pressing all the scraps and cutting them into three specific sizes. She says those sizes play well together. Then you sort them by color, or theme maybe. They will stack easily and take up much less room then the piles of scraps.

Then in the magazine there are 10 projects of quilts and things to use them for. I am thinking that once you had the system figured out you could use them for so much more then just those projects.

I think I might do this with my scraps. I did already go through most of mine folded them up to fit with my fat quarters, plus cut the tinier ones up to do that thing with the adding machine paper tape.

When we were planning to move over ten years ago, I had a tremendous amount of scraps and couldn't bear to toss them. I was not into quilting then at all, and didn't have a rotary cutter. So I cut four inch square pieces out with a paper template. I filled up a whole bin with them. a good size bin. I did make one lap quilt from them and there is not a dent in the bin at all. I had to sew four together and square up each time.

So, anyway, I thought you would all like to hear about this magazine and the great ideas. Some people probably already know about this and do it, but it was new to me.

Katia, thanks for sharing this! Managing scraps is like the never ending race.:D

lindy-2 04-14-2012 02:07 PM

sounds like a good idea

audsgirl 04-14-2012 02:27 PM

It says these ideas were taken from the book Scrap Therapy, which I already have. I love the book, so I am sure you would find some great ways to gobble up that stash.

The phrase "plays well together" sounds like Bonnie Hunter. Wonder if it is based on her pre-cut sizes -- she uses a lot of strips and cuts them into squares and triangles when needed for a project. I'm going to look for the magazine. Thanks for the info.

19angel52 04-15-2012 03:21 AM

Thanks for sharing....I may break my no-buy rule and go find this magazine!

craftymatt2 04-15-2012 07:49 AM

I am on my way to search also, thank you for sharing.

Just ordered from the web site

I cut mine into 2.5, then 2.0 and finally into 1.5 inch squares and stash them in containers until the need to play small and scrappy hits me - quite regularly. Bonnie Hunter's book "Adventures with Leaders and Enders" got me started and I have already done several quilts in this book. I have four other scrap quilts on the list to make for a charity before August and am looking at my blocks and thinking there is more cutting in my future. I am working on the "Rick Rack Nines" quilt right now. I have to add the final border and it will be ready for quilting. This quilt took almost 2700 2" squares to make the 290 nine patches.

I went through my fabric one spring and pulled anything smaller than a fat quarter or the tails on larger pieces and put them into a grocery bag (large paper one). I took them to our beach house and over the summer I cut enough scraps to make five or six scrap quilts (queen size). One of them took three different sizes and that was my starting point - once those pieces were cut, then I cut the other three sizes mentioned above.

McCalls Quilting Magazine had a pattern that used a 16 patch and an hour-glass block. That was it. They were set in rows and when it was all laid out it looked like it was set on point. I made five or six of these. They all looked different because of the hour-glass blocks and borders.

Scrap quilting is by far my favorite.

Thanks for sharing...... great idea...........

Katia 04-15-2012 03:40 PM

The sizes she recommended is 2 inch, 3 and a half inch, and 5 inch. I think it is a wonderful idea too. I just need to get on it.

I bought this magazine from JoAnn's this weekend. Very interesting concept...worth the investigation. Resembles some of the information from Bonnie Hunter.

damaquilts 04-16-2012 05:27 AM

I redid all my fabric ,measuring and wrapping everything 1/2 yd and up on comic book boards. Anything not a full width or smaller is being cut up. Until then they are being stored in kitty litter buckets. I first cut fat quarters, then 10 inch squares then 5, 3.5 , and 3 , 2.5 inch strips. Some are already cut into bigger strips so they go in a basket. I am also cutting the pieces I have left over after cutting squares, into triangles whatever size they come out and strips as small as 1 inch. Anything smaller than that is getting tossed in a basket and probably going in the trash. They really are mostly just slivers. I am trying to clear out everything thing I really don't need or have room for. Getting back to basics. I am sewing them into pairs and then will make scrap quilts or cover dog crate pads with them.

linmid 04-16-2012 01:18 PM

What were the 3 specific sizes? It sounds like I need to get this to help me with my non organizational skills. LOL

I was thinking the same thing. I am a Bonnie Hunter fan.

I sent off for this book from Amazon.com, and I just love it!!! I have cut lots of my scraps and stored them, but have not yet made any of the quilts in the book. You have inspired me to get out my "stacked stash" and do something with it!

Scrapper 04-17-2012 12:04 PM

I order the book too........sounds like the perfect way to get my scraps under some form of "control". Can someone please explain what the "that thing with the adding machine paper tape" entails.....sounds intriquing.

Thanks

charity-crafter 04-17-2012 12:38 PM

Where does your Costco have the magazines? I've not seen them in my local Costco. But I may be overlooking it.

damaquilts 04-17-2012 12:42 PM

I just ordered the book from the library. I know I have a lot of scraps lets see what I can make with them

linmid 04-17-2012 01:26 PM

w7sue which McCalls Quilting magazine are you talking about. I would love to use us some scraps and I like the sound of 16 patch and hour-glass block. Thanks

penski 04-20-2012 09:05 PM

rubyluise 05-16-2012 11:12 PM

Bonnie Hunter at quiltville.com is one person who uses EVERY scrap. Check her out. She was at our guild and inspired many people.

This definitely sounds like Bonnie Hunter. She describes her methods in a 2005 blog:
http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/...rs-system.html

I really like her blog, and she is a Gwen Marston fan; of whom I am also a fan.
Their approach to quilting (and Freddy Moran's color philosophy) strikes me as pure joy; and
more in keeping with how quilters in the "early days" created their quilts.

Katia 05-18-2012 01:52 PM

I've been looking at her blog too. And yes, quite the same. But great stuff. I love having the patterns in my hands.

Hi, My daughter bought me this book for Christmas and I love it. I have organised all my bags of scraps and have started working on some of the projects in the book (Scrap Therapy). The book is available on Amazon UK. Now I'm tempted to go out and buy more fabric so i can cut that up as well :)

I received this same magazine 'Quilt Your Stash' as a gift whilst on holidays in Hawaii recently and I must say I am impressed. It's a great magazine and I know I am going to get a lot of use from it. There are some really great projects and ideas in the magazine and the patterns are easy to follow and beautifully illustrated. Top magazine.

Thank you for sharing.

I bought this book a couple of weeks ago.

I started cutting my scraps into 6 1/2, 5 1/2, 4 1/2 and 2 1/2 strips a couple of months ago. I know that I like these sizes and I am also a math person so I can translate to what I need.

I am looking at some quilts to make for my nieces and nephews for Christmas and I thought this would be a way to get started.

hensandhollyhocks 05-19-2012 01:56 PM

I just recently started cutting squares from my scraps all the way down t 1 1/2 inches. I then store them in my DH's empty cigar boxes and it is amazing how little room they take up. I hope I can do this with the rest of my scraps. I also kind of enjoy seeing what size square I can get from a scrap.

Yes, I'd like to know what that thing is too!

Thank you for sharing. My scraps are all tossed in a large box and are out of control. This method might just work for me.

Here's a tutorial from this board on the "Adding Machine Paper" thing!
