Legs of sewing stool scratching the floor -- solved!
1 Attachment(s)
My sewing stool is 60 yrs old, just like the Singer cabinet it goes with, and my Singer 15-91 (and I am that old also!). I love the stool, but its wooden legs like to scratch our laminate floor. The felt pads that we tried to use always came off too quickly, even after my husband glued them on. So, I did something else, something I learned from a church custodian who was tired of table legs scratching up his newly waxed floors. Tennis balls! See the pic. They look funny, but they're working fine!

Our school does this to dampen the sound of the desks/chairs in our classrooms! Especially helpful for my youngest, who was highly distracted by sounds!
Clever girl! It looks quiet funky too!
What a great idea!
you could always cover those with your fabric of choice...
I would use baby socks and a rubber band to keep them on.
I have seen this done before and it does make a wonderful difference. Thanks for sharing.
awesome...will try to make a mental note of that for my sister..hehe
Good idea! I have also seen crocheted/knitted "booties" to slip on the legs.
Looks very "sporty".:D
So smart!!! Why didn't I think of that.....thank you! :)
I have that same stool - even the same color! Thanks for the great idea.
thanks for the great tip!
quite ingenious...... like on walker legs.... I used to have a terrible set of kitchens chairs that were hard on my floors, I found a set of "teflon/silicon?" chair feet that nailed onto the bottoms, sure made them glide nicely. I got mine at the hardware store, but I've now seen them at WallyWorld......
U do what works.... who cares if it's funky! |
They are cute and functional. They look like booties for stool legs. Thanks for sharing.

Does this stool have a removable seat with storage about 3" deep underneath? If so then I think I have one thinking it was Aunt GG's vanity seat! Aunt GG was a marvelous seamstress so it is feasible for her to have one!
OBTW great idea |

Yep, the seat lifts off and there is storage in there. It's probably a sewing stool! I keep assorted extra sewing feet in there, and the original manual, but not much else. I'm a 'if I can't see it, I forget about it' person, so hidden storage doesn't work.

A quick fix, and inexspensive too.
lol I would paint a face on each one !! Great idea for sure !!
I love your idea. Thank you.

These are popping up on the ends of clothing racks in stores to keep people from getting hurt. Also, one day I was in a dept store and the janitor had a tennis ball on the end of a mop handle. He was walking around wiping the black shoe marks from the white floor. Worked like a charm!
Wish I had the clear canisters all these tennis balls came in..... |
Great idea. Will have to file it away for future use when we install laminate floors.
That is a wonderful idea!
How clever! Maybe you can cover them with something quilty looking?
Great idea, helps to protect the bottom of the legs on your lovely stool, it is worth protecting.
Very good idea
Great idea, will have to remember this for sure......thanks for sharin

We use the balls on walkers in nursing homes all the time. They're really great!
As a retired school teacher I have used many a tennis ball. The custodians do not do well as keeping the floors well waxed or buffed. so ALL the chairs STICK to the floor. all 27 or so of them. Imagine the noise of 27 chairs scraping across a poorly fnished floor. It took a long time but i finally collected enought tennis balls to go on all the chairs. When i retired the newer teachers fought over them!

That is what many people use on walkers, for similar reasons. My DH put down a desk chair mat, which is quite a bit more expensive and probably not any better. If the looks bother you, embellish them or use permanent markers to change the looks. Button faces might work for you.

Smart thinking. We put tennis balls on my moms walker and it really made it easier for her to use it.
A great idea.

People use these on Walkers also in nursing homes. They work great.

I have the same sewing machine and stool! I was using it today to reupholster leather cushions. I call it my 'tank'. You just can't find sewing machines made like these anymore. I was sewing thick leather, in 2 layers it came to a full 1/4" thickness. It didn't even hiccup. What a great sewing machine! I have the Centennial 15-91.

Christine: Mine is a Centennial 15-91 as well! Her name is My Sweet Ada, named after my G'ma Drake, but this was my Mother's machine -- purchased the same year I was born. In high school, I sewed a vest out of leather and suede scraps. I did invest in a leather needle for her, but she and her metal gears went right through those layers.
I keep saying that if she ever does quit working (which I don't expect) that she'll make a great boat anchor, because she weighs a ton! Now I'm going to check out your blog....

Great ideal as I have seen them used on walkers quit a bit. :}

If you go to your local tennis club you can often get used balls. These do not off gas and sometimes you can get different colours . I have some navy blue ones. Sure save on the floors but took awhile for my dog to stop trying to carry them off:)
Oh, this is just too amazing. I have laminate floors and have gone almost crazy trying to keep something on the bottoms of chair legs to prevent scratching. I do a lot of stuff with dogs and I already knew there are smaller tennis balls for small dogs so when I started googling I found pre-cut tennis balls for chairs. :) There were a couple of different sites. One has a lot of different colors and another had different sizes. So if you are looking for something in, say, your kitchen or living room it might be possible to get something that blends in a bit better than a the standard bright green tennis ball.
