My new custom Quilting Table Top

1 Attachment(s)
I'm new to quilting but have fallen in love with it. I have just a plain singer sewing machine and have been sewing on the living room table. I showed my Mom so she built me a top that will go over any table to turn it into a quilting center and wanted to share it.

She built it with an extra piece of plywood and 2 two by fours. She put my sewing machine on top and drew around it then cut the piece out. She put 1 two by four on the end where the sewing machine goes and nailed it down and cut off the extra piece that was where the sewing machine would go. She used that small cut piece to put on the front on the other side of the sewing machine. The 2nd two by four she didn't nail down so that I could easly carry the pieces around. When ready I just set the other two by four on the table top at the other end and set the top on it. I did have to use a scrap piece of wood to raise my sewing machine upto the exact line so that it was completely flush. I used a piece of vinyal fabric I got at a thrift store to cover the wood top and stapled it down and around then used duck tape to cover all corners so nothing would catch on the wood, thou my Mom had used her sander to sand everything flat. The ducktape was just extra insurance.

This leaves me with space for my small ironing board to fit on one side, a slotted box to store my notions underneath the table and have put all my cutting boards on top for when I need to cut anything.
Eventually I'll get another table but for now this works perfect.

Yeah! for MOM! Nice to see a woman not afraid of power tools. Not suggesting anyone on here is, because we all work on our machines and stuff. Quilters have it happening. I just meant, I think it is great to hear your MOM jumped right in there.

My grandfather had 5 boys but my Mom was his favorite son, at least that is what she loves to say. My grandfather taught her all he knew of building. My Mom is 65 so back then it was not something that most girls did like we do now. Growing up, if anything ever broke or needed to be done my Mom did it while Dad sat on the couch watching sports. Of course my Dad was a hard worker but not of the around the house variety. They are both retired now and my Mom just loves to build things. Her Christmas list is more woodworking tools.

She said she is coming over tomorrow to help me turn my spare room into a crafting room so I'm pretty excited to see what we can come up with. My husband is a lot like my father. A hard worker but not handy around the house. My Mom comes over to do any of the fixing. She is in her element and enjoys it so who am I to dissuade her lol. Especially since we both benefit from it.

Boy can I identify with your Mom. All I want for Christmas is a new circular saw mine is at least 35 yrs old and is wanting to retire. My favorite place to shop is Menards. All 4 of my brothers are in the building trades so talking shop is easier for me then talking about 'girly' stuff. When I moved from Ohio to Missouri the 22ft truck I rented was packed but only the front 6 ft of it was household furnishings and appliances. The remaining16 ft were divided with tools and sewing.

Great job! You're lucky to have such a handy mom! My DH works hard at his job and is too tired for handyman projects. I have more power tools than he does.
