wolph33 07-25-2012 07:53 AM

awesome-I have no bare wall space big enough for one-so I use my bed.

Tartan 07-25-2012 08:14 AM

That is a great design wall and I like the grid on it too. What did you use for the grid?

sew4nin 07-25-2012 09:53 AM

My hubby printed an excel spreadsheet with 2"X2" cells on an HP Designjet large format plotter. He's an engineer:o
I have quite a few things in my sewing room that he has custom engineered for me. I have been meaining to post sewing room pictures, but haven't gotten to it yet.
Thanks for looking

Love it.....I think you hubby is a keeper!

nygal 07-25-2012 06:14 PM

It looks great.

QuiltE 07-25-2012 07:38 PM

Niiiiiiiice!!
You'll never regret it ... and will soon want to fill up that blank wall to the right with another design wall.

Tartan ... you can buy a flannelette fabric with the grid on it. I believe it's 2" squares. When I took the OBW course, the LQS had design walls for everyone, and it was a real treat to work with the grid. If I didn't have my wall already installed, that'd be what I'd use.

So very nice I need one of those, but don't have the room for it. Your DH. did a wonderful job!!

audsgirl 07-25-2012 09:54 PM

Wow, that's terrific! Wish I had one that big.

I made my own, no grid but it does the trick. Just got it up. Finishing up a quilt then I'll put it to good use. The tape is gone now. Just couldn't wait to try it out and snap a pic. I'm also rearranging my sewing room I'll post pics at a later date.

There's other possibilities and they don't have to be permanent ... just a few to start ... cover over your closet doors? back of the door into the room? temporarily tape it up with painter's tape on a hall wall? or any other wall in your home?

I used flannelette for my first one that I taped up and then tried polar fleece, which is what I used when I went permanent.

Rylandon3 07-26-2012 04:24 AM

What type of board is the grid on? It sure looks nice and very useful!

You are lucky to have a DH that can do things like that for you. What is your backing made out of?

sew4nin 07-26-2012 07:16 AM

He used 1/2" foam insulation from Home Depot.

My backing is made of the lighter weight Pellon fleece. The grid shows through.

Very nice! Wish I had a space for one. So happy for you!....

Jingle 07-26-2012 12:54 PM

That is great, I use my bed , don;t have much wall space.

nunnyJo 07-26-2012 01:34 PM

very nice, see you're from St. Charles, was my old stomping ground in the late 70's. loved it there.

fleurdelisquilts.com 07-26-2012 05:36 PM

I like that grid so much I'm tempted to draw one on the flannel tablecloth that serves as my design wall. "Tempted" does not mean it will be done tomorrow. lol Really, love your wall and I'd like to see some of the other things he's engineered for you.

pippi65 07-26-2012 08:00 PM

Wow nice & big!! Bet that's gonna get a lot of use!! Good hubby!!

Kathy Osterby 07-27-2012 10:46 AM

My sewing room has slanted wall like in an attic so no place for a design wall. Instead I take advantage of the ceiling tile to pin the quilt to them and that way it hangs straight and I can step back for a look. Have absolutely no space for a permanent design wall. Will have to get some flannel to hang so I don't have to pin blocks together before hanging them.

captlynhall 07-27-2012 06:46 PM

That looks great. I will check out the foam insulation at Home Depot. I purchased the Fons & Porter design wall but was trying to decide where to put it. I don't have that much wall space, but was thinking of placing in front of my closet double doors when I need to use it. With the insulation, I'm thinking I could duct tape a couple of pieces together so it could be folder and stored under the bed when not in use. Thanks for showing it. Your husband did a good job.

katesnanna 07-30-2012 05:39 PM

Awesome!!!

Cristel 08-07-2012 03:41 AM

This is great, in what kind of material your hubby made the board, my hubby started to paint my new hobbyroom so I'm still looking for ideas and this is great. I tought to cover a part of the wall with cork and use that as disign wall, what do you think would it work?

sew4nin 08-08-2012 05:32 AM

He used 1/2" foam insulation board from Home Depot. I noticeyou are in Belgium, so I don't know what stores you would have. You should be able to get it at a store that sells construction materials. Cork would probably work, but it would be much heavier and probably more expensive. He used 2 pieces of 4' X 8' foam board at about $13 each. Good luck and feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

I'm sure it will get a lot of use. Great project by your DH.
A design wall is the one thing I don't have, but wish I did, no wall available.

I'm green with envy! How lucky are you!

sew4nin 08-13-2012 03:14 PM

Cindyg19 - I posted sewing room pics a day or 2 after this. I am not sure how to direct you to them. I will try to figure it out. If anyone else knows how to do it, I would welcome the help!
