My Sewing Nook

4 Attachment(s)
I thought I'd share some pics of my sewing space. It's not huge and it's not fancy, but it works for me. For now anyway. lol My husband told me I couldn't even entertain the idea of taking over the garage or the bedroom.

My little space is set up in a built in corner bench in my kitchen area.

My machines are my mom's old Singer, and the other day she gave me her old Janome serger. Until I can get something a little more stable, I've got them on tv trays.

This little three drawer cart holds my supplies, and I have that sorter holding my scissors, rulers, etc.

I set up my ironing board when I need it, and when I'm cutting out anything, I use my dining room table, which isn't far away.

Nothen like having your own space, love the lace sorter !
happy quilting !

Great space, enjoy!!!

Grandma58 02-28-2012 10:07 AM

A fabulous beginning! You are on your way to taking over a bedroom or the garage! Your husband will figure it out in awhile!

AliciaH 02-28-2012 11:50 AM

Thanks ladies!

LOL Grandma58 - Since he works in the oilfield and is gone alot, I could have the space taken over before he'd even notice!:D

Great use of the space! It is amazing how us quilters can get such a functional work area, all organized, with a very limited space! I had to reduce mine when we moved, from a large bedroom and wall-to-wall closet, to a small nook with no closet (I have to use my bedroom closet, which thankfully, is a large one) to store all fabrics, and some tall wire shelving and a couple of tressel tables. When my ironing board is up, there is just enough room for me to take one step around! But, I make it work!

AUQuilter 02-28-2012 12:24 PM

What a nice space you have made for yourself! I have a few of the plastic drawers and love them.

Pat M. 02-28-2012 12:49 PM

Do you have storage under the bench seats? There is usually a empty area under them.

Tartan 02-28-2012 01:01 PM

It's a sweet little nook because it's all yours! When looking at your picture an idea came to me. Wouldn't that be a great spot for one of the hospital bedside table to put your machine on? You know the ones that you can raise and lower and that has nice rollers on the feet. I'm thinking I need to be on the lookout for one of those!

Judith1005 02-28-2012 01:47 PM

Nice usage of your space. Small and compact. But, you have it organized nicely. Enjoy your little niche.

Floralfab 02-28-2012 01:50 PM

You have a nice space all for yourself and we all need that. Enjoy it and have lots of fun!

AliciaH 02-28-2012 04:09 PM

Thanks ladies!

Pat M. - when they built that one, they didn't make it so the seat would raise up.

AuntieD 02-28-2012 05:34 PM

Excellent use of space!

Pickles 02-28-2012 08:19 PM

I'm like you I don't have much space are room either , but I like you make it work for me, you go girl!!

Country1 02-28-2012 09:15 PM

VERY good use of space, I like it!...

chairjogger 02-29-2012 04:09 AM

I envy you to have a place that you can walk away from. Everything is in my living room. :0/

AliciaH 02-29-2012 04:28 AM

Thanks ladies!

Chairjogger - I wouldn't have had space in our last home, it was 850 sq feet for four people, and we'd outgrown it long ago! We moved here in November and at first I couldn't decide what I was going to do with that little nook. Then I started getting interested in the quilting my mom was doing. In that little house, I didn't do any crafts, there just wasn't room.

Sewfine 02-29-2012 05:44 AM

That's nice. Love your new sewing nook.

Scraps 02-29-2012 05:51 AM

Neat and Nice! Enjoy! I am on an oversized card table in the guest bedroom. Linen closet is fabric and notions. Monday I purchased a pressing board for the end of the table so I don't always have to have the ironing board up. Amazing what we can do in our own little spaces isn't it? :-)

sylviak 02-29-2012 06:58 AM

Just an idea, but I've been needing a long small table for one of my machines and Walmart has a table with legs that fold up in the furniture section that is 4 ft long and 20 or 24 inches wide that looks very sturdy. It's $24. I'm thinking of buying one if I can't find something cheaper used. You might want to look at it. You could put plastic drawers under it for storage.

Love that. lol

Linda - K. 02-29-2012 09:34 AM

That's a nice space! You have it well organized. It's better than some of my earlier places I had to use to sew.

karate lady 02-29-2012 10:58 AM

Isn't it amazing what we can do when we want to???? Small space or big room, we still produce beautiful things.

conniemaried 02-29-2012 11:21 AM

It's sooo nice when you have a spot to leave your machines set up. Enjoy!

carolynjo 02-29-2012 02:31 PM

Love your nook. You seem to have thought of everything!

jansquiltn 03-01-2012 03:50 AM

How wonderful. My hubby has just relinquished the garage. We are building it out so that I can bring in my new baby. I'm getting a longarm, Yeah!!!! should be here about the end of the month.

margee 03-01-2012 07:40 AM

Enjoy your space. I also use the plastic bins with drawers. They're a big help.

CajunBear 03-01-2012 09:02 PM

Great room Al! I can see mom's organization in there! lol

Hugs,
Cajun

AliciaH 03-02-2012 05:41 AM

Thanks ladies!

Cajunbear - Yeh, maybe a little. lol

DonnaC 03-02-2012 07:08 PM

I think you have a really nice and very efficient little space!

amyjo 03-03-2012 08:19 AM

I think I would go to Menard's or another cheaper building place and see if they have 4 ft countertops for sale (here they are about $10 for 1) and have it setting where you have the tv trays. get some type of legs that can be attached underneath and you are good to go for a sturdier sewing space.

QuiltnNan 03-06-2012 10:16 AM

it's compact, but seems to have what you need, at least for now :)

3TreeFrog 03-10-2012 02:28 PM

Hi

I am so happy for you! It's nice to have a space you can call your own.

I HAD a spot until my accident last summer where I came close to loosing my left hand! Now that things are working again, it is time I go re-claim my space!

Enjoy your space and your time in your space!

Louise

I got one that sounds like this and am happy with it. It's heavy duty plastic so easy to clean if you have to store in garage/shed. also, I have the plastic drawers on wheels, but mine is a little taller and has narrower sized drawers at the top which come in very handy. Like your space! I need the cover for machine like you have to keep dust out.

I have thought about getting one of those tables to use in the living room, handwork, trimming blocks, using a hand crank machine to do paper piecing. But, are they stable? Would it shake and rattle? It would be so handy and convenient.

Chasing Hawk 03-17-2012 03:47 PM

It looks quite cozy!!

We when we moved into our current house three years ago. My husband picked the larger of the two extra bedrooms for my sewing room. Since I acquired a Long arm frame my sewing room has taken over the spare bedroom "aka the cat's bedroom"......lol

Denise_the_Quilt_Lady 03-18-2012 07:10 PM

I am so impressed by all of you who can make such incredible use of small spaces. I am more the spread out kind of person. My sewing space in the basement is so cramped and unworkable for me that i am moving it to the patio. literally! we will have ground breaking on the new room very soon. it will be 20 by 30 feet and include two office/computer spaces (one for me and one for him) and it will also have a sitting area and tons of space for my new "studio" i will be blogging it as it happens for those who are interested.
