Need idea
I have 2 of those cutting tables think came from hancocks million years ago u know it rolls and ends lift up to make cutting area or fold down to save space. Well my problem with height is different. Most need something to make cutting tables higher i am only. 5 ft. Seem to be shrinking as I age too!! So these cutting tables are a tad too high to be really comfortable. So do I scrap them or is there something. I can do to make these more comfortable? I am getting ready to empty my sewing room paint walls a creamy yellow and all the furniture some color so it all blends together better. This was my mil sewing room it's been 2 years she's been gone so am ready to make it mine. Figured smart as people on this board are someone could tell me about the cutting tables! Thanks!

Do they have legs you can cut down? Can you post a picture so we have a better idea of what they look like?
I have the same table; same issue...I'm 5'2" so it's really a tad high for me to be comfortable. Easiest solution I can come up with is to remove the wheels on the bottom. This does, however, delete some of the versatility of these tables. I honestly can't remember the last time I folded mine down - either or both sides - so I'm seriously considering this myself.
Those tables aren't cheap. I would think the "right height" step stool would work well. Maybe something 12' by ?? feet. That way you wouldn't have to move it much.
I wouldn't go for a step stool or any sort of a platform ... too easy to fall off, and sprain/break your leg/ankle!
Ditto ... consider removing the wheels Another option would be to have someone cut a few inches off the legs of the tables. Just be sure first as to what height you want it to be. |
If the legs are wooden, a section could be cut out to make it the correct height for you. Then drill a hole in both ends of the leg where it has been cut and place a rod or dowel into the holes. Use wood glue to hold it in place. That way you can keep the wheels on the end of the legs. Good luck with whatever you do. And yes we are shrinking with age. I am down to 5'1" from 5'3". And I now know where the height we lose goes. Around our middles. Isn't that strange!

Remove the wheels and place those "slider" pads under the feet.
Good Idea!

But hated to lose the "movability". I knew this smart board would come up with a solution. Thank you! |
you can put some of those sliders underneath and still move it if you want.
Have you thought about wearing shoes with some height to the sole? They are currently fashionable and can be very comfortable to wear. If you only need a little boost, that might solve the problem. I just bought a pair of klogs that give me a lift and are super comfortable.
I would suggest...see if the wheels can be removed, legs cut down and wheels replaced. Therefore you will not loose
the beautiful function of this table. I love mine and would take your extra height you don't need if I could. I'm 5'7'' and I have the opposite problem with most things such as mops, brooms etc. I have to hold onto the top ends of them so I don't have to bend forward with my bad back. |
I was looking at mine, & IMHO your only option is to remove the castors ( as mentioned several times before). The legs can't be cut down because of the way it was constructed. If it is still to high after removing the castors, your only other options may be to sell what you have & custom build something to suit your height. I know that probably sounds like a lot of work & trouble, but, It's better to do that than not be able to do something comfortably. It's really not that difficult to DIY your own cutting table. I'm sure you have checked out many of the wonderful examples on here. FYI: maybe you need to send a letter or e-mail to the manufacturer & tell them your story. Maybe you can convince them to make a line of tables for petite quilter & crafters. (Good idea, don't you think?) Maybe we should all start a campaign to do this. There has to be more than 1 person with this problem. OK, who wants to start?
I agree I love the tables I just end up using the dining table if I have much to cut as it is lower. You are right we have the exact opposite problem!
Or you can go to the Home Depot or Lowe's which ever your choice and hubby can make you a box to stand on with rollers that lower when you want to move them and raise when you stand on them. if you cut the legs off of your table you will have to keep checking level. I've seen these boxes for around $20.00.
How about a rolling adjustable chair that gets you to just the right height?
Why don't you sell them and use that money on something that works for you?
Will you be moving the tables after remodeling is done?
Nan |
Can you take the rollers off?

Instead of altering the table, could you get a typist's chair which you can alter the height of? Angi
Have someone cut off the legs to a more comfortable height and then put the rollers back on. My DH put the wheels on a huge cabinet so we can roll the TV out from the wall when we wanted to watch it. It is not a hard job at all.
Good to hear from othe 'altitude challenged' ladies. Last time measured, I dropped below 5'! Am considering cutting legs of sewing tables that I inherited from DM(5'6"). Rollers or gliders will be my solution.
I would hate for you to loose the movability too. Do you know anyone who can make a 2' x 4' platform out of 2 by 6's.
That would give you 6" of height and make it so you can slide it under the table when not using it. Or even make it as long as the table is when it is extended. My problem is just the opposite. I am 5'9" and end up with a back ache when I use anything to cut my fabric, etc Good Luck |
I too am 5' & have that table. Now I love the height & sometimes wish it were higher. My lower back gives me fits so the higher would be of a big help.
I am 5' and it hurts my shoulders if I have to stand at that table very long. I took the wheels off, have small moving men under the legs (of course my table doesn't get moved very often). It works so much better. What made me think of that was I removed the wheels on both my sewing cabinets, much easier to set and sew. My chair was up as high as it wud go so had to think of something. It works for this shorty.. ;o)

My Hubs said to tak off whhels on shorter one and then add a piece of wood underneath to "match up" and then put the wheels back on!
After taking the wheels off, if it's still a little too high, you could go to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy a couple of those rubber mats to stand on. That will make standing at your cutting table more comfortable, and it will raise YOU up a couple inches.
Instead of a stool how about something like a railway sleeper the width of a foot or more. And place on the floor all down sides you use.
I sounds like you have gotten a lot of good suggestions...any one of them would work, however I sure hate to hear you ladies talk about losing height. I am one of the vertically challenged - 5' even - I haven't really lost any height yet, but I'm sure I will, just don't like to think about it. At 73 yo I have learned to deny a lot of things.

At a resale shop you may be able to find a nice size platform that was designed for stair stepping exercise in the 1980's, and that would be safer than a small step stool. You'd always have to be mindful of your feet, though. |
if you cut the legs down you may still be able to easily move the tables by putting tennis balls on them. When my hubby was using a walker he put tennis balls on the legs without wheels and it made using the walker so much easier. Just cut a hole in the ball big enough for the legs.
Well I am lucky that mine is wooden, so I can cut it down. However I have a sewing chair that my legs were dangling from since I'm only 5' too. I went to a caster store and they sold me better casters and cut down my chair legs (also wooden) to attach the new casters. Love it, love it. I think I'll take the table in now and they can put better casters on it and cut it down too. Thanks for posting the question.

crochet a rug if want out of narrow strips. |
If you prefer having the rollers on, then take them off, take the amount off to include the height of the rollers than attach them back on. You really shouldn't be sitting when cutting with a rotary blade unless you are ancient and old like me! :)
