Sewing Space Re-Org

I have been using a corner our large master bedroom as my sewing space for awhile now. It was awful. Cramped, disorganized couldn't get to anything and things didn't get put away--what a mess.

My DH offered me more than half of our 13'x26' bedroom :D we have been discussing doing the reorg for a few months. Two weeks ago I measured all the furniture and mapped out a new layout. The new layout included buying new 10' poles for my quilting frame(up from about 7') and bringing in a second 3'x6' desk.:thumbup:

Well, I have been working on the project for two weekends. Gosh, who knew it takes so much time! And, it still isn't done!

Last weekend, we rearranged all the furniture and bought the new frame poles and I did some initial organizing.

This weekend, I have been working on putting my stash on comic book boards. And, this afternoon we bought some cabinets, the unfinished ready made kitchen type cabinets from Home Depot and got them hung up. (Happy Mother's Day!!)

It is still a mess and a work in progress, and I failed to take before pictures, but I will take some pictures of the current status tomorrow and get them posted. I could use a little encouragement.:o

Tonight, all I can do is go to bed.
Where is the sewing room fairy? I wish she would come and waive her magic wand over my space. :)

Good night, happy Cinco de Mayo!
Suze

Pictures please! Sewing spaces are always a work in progress. You'll rearrange again and again as you learn to live in the space.

Hope you get your space finished soon, so you can relax and sew. But as Sandygirl said, its a never ending process. LOL Looking forward to photos.

Tartan 05-06-2012 05:59 AM

Sounds like it will be a much happier place for you to work in. Yes, it's a lot of work to get it there but you will enjoy your space more when it is done. Remember "you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs." It's a mess right now but it will be BEAUTIFUL!

Hi Suze!
It sure is a big deal to re-organize a sewing space and don't you feel good that you are on the way to having the space you have wanted for some time. Good for you! Keep up the good work and don't cut it short because you get to feeling pressured just to have it done. Yes it takes some time and thought, but, it is well worth it!

My room change re-organization took a month and a half doing the actual work part. That was pretty much working on it daily. I love knowing where every item is in the room and finding it in a pleasing order when I go to find it. You will find that sometimes it can feel like a drudge, but, go for the gold! You can do it!

Here is one more little hint for you. When I don't have time to put things away between projects, find a spot to put things that need to be put back away. It saves lots of time and energy to have them all in the same spot. I clean/straighten mine on friday's so it is a fresh start at the beginning of the week.

It seems discoraging now but just wait ... one of these days you will look back and be very glad you did it. Your sewing time will be so much happier. I envy you.

Good morning, Everyone!
Thank you so much for all the kind and encouraging words!! What a great boost this morning!

My DH got up this morning and said, "let's do it" and we worked together for a few hours to get things settled to the extent that it isn't visually disturbing and I can get in to work on getting things organized and officially put away.

Here are the promised pictures!!

Front left side with close of up cabinets we installed last night. Like the cabinets. The art work is from my DS.

Back left side. We are planning on putting additional cabinets here. We will have to work in stages though.

Front right side. This is the mess I will concentrate on cleaning up first. I have already removed 2 large tubs of fabric (what has been put in the cabinet).

I have to take a second and say thank you Lord for my wonderful DH. I still wouldn't be able to walk through that area if he hadn't gotten up this morning and said "Let's do it!"

Have a wonderful rest of your weekend!
Suze

What to say? I love looking at ppl's creative spaces.
I'd love to have a room with wall's that color!
Your window is spectacular as is your son's artwork, and bless his heart, he gave it to mom!
Your dh is a jewel.
Mine sanded down an old swing set for me while ago, so I could spray paint it for the grandmouslings.
Yeehaw, we quilters do manage to find the cream of the crop sometimes, don't we?
Love looking at all your fabrics and your making such progress.
Just look at how nice they look in your cabinet!
Way to go

patimint 05-07-2012 04:09 PM

sewbeadit 05-08-2012 01:20 AM

brushandthimble 05-08-2012 05:53 AM

I love the wall color:)
Congradulations on the reorg. looks great!

Suze9395 05-08-2012 07:16 PM

Glad y'all like it so much. We picked up some lights on Sunday and mounted them under the cabinets.
I did my first sewing in it tonight, what a joy. I finished my sister's signature quilt from her wedding last summer. Something marked off the to do list! Yay!
That big window looks out over the front. There are big trees and squirrels. Part of the room design process was ensuring we could get to it to open it and the blinds.
It's funny all the positive comments on the wall color. It looks a little orange in the pictures, but it is actually an Americana red. It was painted when we moved in. The entire downstairs was painted really dark (i.e. hunter green in the LR). After using SO MANY coats of paint in the rest of the house, I think we have changed our minds and decided we like it just fine too! :o
Good night

cousinpenny 05-09-2012 03:00 AM

Why don't you just convert the room to his and her hobby room? It's large enought to support the idea. Just sleep in the guest room, I'd love to do it with my house but hubby won't buy into it. We'd just live in there instead of being split up in the evenings.

wolph33 05-21-2012 08:19 AM

looks like a great space to work in

quiltntoday 05-28-2012 07:19 AM

It looks like your reorganization is coming along well. Isn't it wonderful having a large window in your sewing studio! Continue the good work.

Sandygirl 06-01-2012 03:21 AM

To separate the sewing space from the bedroom space,I would find a nice folding screen or room divider and use it to divide the space. Nice area! Sandy

lots2do 06-01-2012 02:05 PM

What a lovely space. I love the window, especially. Your cabinets are very nice. I'm happy for you!

Suze9395 06-02-2012 07:59 PM

Sandy, I thought about putting in a divider, but my DH comes in and watches TV in the bed in the evenings and it has turned into prime "together" time. We talk and share, etc. If I put in a divider, well, we would be divided.

Room Update. I have finally gotten the 10' poles put on my frame!! Yeah!! There was a misunderstanding about the extra set of pole ends I had ordered 5+ years ago. When I opened the box(yes five years later) it was the wrong set. **sigh** I couldn't believe it. I called but couldn't exchange them, it was too late. I was about to order a new set with the "updated" specifications, when I thought to ask what the updated specs were. Come to find out, it was exactly what I had in my hot little hands! Woo Hoo! I just finished making the new leaders tonight. They are on the frame, ready to got. I also prepared the backs for a queen and a king quilt tops I have completed in the last few weeks. I can't wait to get them on the frame!

Thank you for all the support and encouragement everyone has given me. I really appreciate it!
Good night, y'all!
Suzanne

Great Idea! I can see a special basket some place in my SR waiting for Friday clean-up! Kinda like Rachael Ray's garbage bowl. I can do this!

Fantastic space - when starting a project like this it seems like it gets worse and worse, then all of a sudden it is done and so worth the work. Enjoy your new space.
