I took some time off from sewing this month to make some changes in my studio, adding a large built-in FMQ quilting table and also an "L" shaped table for the serger and the Bernina. :) that's at a much more ergonomically comfortable height.

I've still got a bit of work to do to finish up, but I think I'll take a break from "construction" and do a little quilting now! :-) :-) :-)

Can you see me smiling?
Wendy

Built-in quilting table, finished on April 30th. No more toting the macihine and tables down to the dining room for quilting! :)

I couldn't stop with just the quilting table; had to fix up the other corner of the room for the Bernina and the Husqvarna serger too.

The quilting table is a little over 5 feet wide and 4 feet deep; big enough to comfortably work on freemotion quilting a queen-size.

Mine too! The track lights strategically placed above the quilting table are new, and I painted everything white to help lighten things up. It makes a world of difference in how well I can see to quilt at night.

I have a similar space I use for FMQ, but my machine is not recessed. I do plan to get some kind of smooth panel , cut out for the machine and set it on top of the desk How high from the floor, did your sewing surface finish at?

I finished at about 28 1/2" from the floor to the top of the sewing surface. That allows me enough room to avoid bumping my knees on the bottom of the machine. Having the machine recessed into the table makes all the difference when FMQing!

BTW, I used solid core doors for the tabletop and supported them on the walls and across with 2x4s so that they are nice and solid and don't vibrate when I sew. I also added a 2x2 leg under the back corner of the machine "box".

This is my own design made to fit me, my machine and my space. (If you'd like to see details of how I did this, pm me and I'd be happy send you more pics and info.)

Wendy; just curious about the size of your sewing room. I love what you have done.

It's almost 14 feet square plus a small walk-in closet packed full of stash. I have a 3' x 7' cutting table and a 30" x 60" ironing table also. And a flat panel TV and DVD player for watching movies and quilting videos...

This is my "de-stressing" happy place!!! After a hard week at work, sometimes I hide out here almost all weekend.

Thanks Wendy, I like the solid core door concept. I think I will check out the supply of doors at Home Depot. I am handy with tools, just challenged with imagination.

Love your new additions! My studio is in the basement, so I have as many pot lights as could be put in due to heating ducts, etc. I also have white countertops and a very light beige walls in satin semi-gloss, which reflects the light instead of absorbing it. Isn't it fun to sew when your room is the way you want it?

jeaninmaine 05-01-2011 03:58 AM

Just love your quilting table, big enough to support the whole quilt. That's perfect.
