Dear Abigailgrace. I so sorry about your Mom passing. Quilting is a difficult project. I'm a newbie and am struggling. It is never to late to start. If you are having trouble getting inspired or wondering why you are doing this try doing charity quilts. Also check out Phoenix quilts. She is lady trying to colect quilts tops fabric threads ect. She and her is trying to get enough quilts in any size to the fire burnout people who have lost everything. Check out her website.Hang in there. Carol

Abigailgrace, I am so sorry to hear about your mother. I know you will miss her. It is never to late to learn to quilt if you really want to. Just take it slow. Everyone has to start somewhere. Try a simple pattern. (maybe a lap quilt) And don't be hard on yourself. Just enjoy the process of creating something pretty that you or someone else will enjoy using.

Oh, and by the way, Welcome to the quilt board. I hope you enjoy your time here. Hopefully we will inspire you to stay and quilt with us.

Hi Judith, I am not sure how to reply to a blog just yet but I hope you get this reply. Thank you for your words of encouragement, and I do miss my Mother so so much. She loved when I used to sew garments for her and make things just for her. I know I will enjoy quilting I just have to find a pattern I can finish and enjoy. Thanks and God Bless abigailgrace

Sorry on the loss of your mom and EARLY Happy Birthday! I think if you will get with a quilting guild YOU might find buddy to help as you learn. I have quilted almost 40 years WITH NO formal training..by guess and by golly so it can be done! I am English Paper Piecing a flower garden now which is a GOOD one to start. I find handwork MUCH more forgiving than machine work! Good Luck!

Its never too late to learn to quilt. I have been quilting since my teenage years and hope to do it forever.
So sorry to hear about your mom.

I'm sorry that you lost your mom especially on your birthday, that happened to my mom too. Her mom had a stroke and she spent many years caring for her. Give yourself the time and space you need to grieve, look at patterns and see if anything speaks to you. My mom taught me to sew at 12, but she never quilted. I recently got interested in it and didn't have a clue where to start. There are lots of helpful people here and if you started in a class you can ask questions as you go along. I have kind of put up my quilting for the summer because there is so much to do, but am going at a pace that is comfortable for me. I'm enjoying the process, there is so much to learn and many ways to do things. There are good youtube videos and Craftsy has some online classes you can go at your own pace. The Block of the Month, helps you learn step by step, maybe that will be helpful and you can ask questions there too of the instructor. There are tutorials here too to help. If you get discouraged, put it aside and watch some videos or look for patterns, it isn't age-based, you will learn and there are many to help. Welcome to the Quilting Board. There is also a search box top right of this page for any particular subject you are interested in.
Hoping you will begin to enjoy the process, and make some progress, even small steps are progress.

abigailgrace, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mom. I don't believe we are ever to old to learn something. I am no spring chicken myself and just began learning quilting less then 2 years ago. Going to classes will be fun I am sure. I pray you enjoy your new adventure, keep sewing along.

I am going to a quilting class on Thursday July 19 I am so excited but a little aperahensive to. I am going with a couple of friends that have been wanting to learn quilting also.

So sorry for your loss. I wish you a happier birthday this year and hope you enjoy your quilt class today. Don't give up - take your time and enjoy the creative process. Once you have the basics, the world of quilting is your oyster! Start with a very basic 4 or 9 patch - perhaps a placemat, lap robe or wall hanging. I LOVE to piece and am working on quilts #20 & 21. Have found a long arm quilter to quilt my tops and then I bind them. I also enjoy designing my own tops on graph paper and get inspiration from books, magazines, my laptop and even TV! Hi Abigailgrace: My situation is somewhat the same as yours. I had never quilted. My mother had quilted for years and she basically told me I would never be able to quilt because I was to impatient. After she died I cleaned out her apartment and hauled home her quilt stash. I needed curtains in my laundry and found a 9 patch design that was to be turned at an angle for a valance. Well, after I got going on it I found out how much fun it was and made a two sided quilt. One side is winter and one side is summer. It really is assume. I was 69 when I made the first quilt. It took awhle and there was cursing, ripping and getting the corners to come out straight was a challenge but it was a good challenge. I suggest start with something like a lap pad and don't get hung up on how perfect it is suppose to be. I see quilts at shows and am awed by them and maybe I will be there someday, but I put no pressure on myself and do the best I can. I am making my great-grandson a twin quilt with a pattern called "attic window" and using primary colors. The backing is striped fleece. OOOOPPPPs. I am quilting with stitch in the ditch and forgot that the stripes should be straight on the back. Pinned 4 times. Then the fleece buckled in spots. Ripped and sewed 3 times and still bunched. So am doing some by hand. Doesn't look that great but HEY it's hand made and I'll bet nobody cares but me. Have fun!!!
