Have a ? about finishing an OLD quilt top from the 40's!

Hi one and all, I need to do a little brain picking! In other words HELP!!!
I have made quilts for friends and family. I have even sold a few (didn't make them to sell, but it just worked out that way), but I have been asked to finish a friends mothers quilt (only top finished at this time). This was made back in the 40's, but never finished. I am looking at making two lap quilts out of this one quilt top (friend has two kids and wants to be able to give each one something from the grandmother they never got to know). I though NO problem, before I was told the story of why the quilt was never finished (so sad). Now I don't know if I a going to be the best person for this job. I want this to be WONDERFUL, not just ------.
I will be looking this quilt top over this weekend. So I would like to know if I should be looking for anything (I know to look at the shape of the fabric, etc), so if anyone else has done this (I know many of you have), PLEASE feel free to give me any hints, etc.

    You have a tough decision to make. Personally I would take it to a quilt appraiser and get her opinion. I recently pulled out my grandmothers quilts to try and finish the tops and luckily before I did anything I sought out an appraiser(not for the value but because they are trained in helping people with antique quilts). She gave me some wonderful hints on how to complete the tops, what was the best kind of fabric to use for that era for the backing. Kind of batting to use or in one case not to use, thread and the style of hand quilting that I needed to do so as to not devalue the quilts. It was well worth the cost and I know that my children will be thankful that I took the time to do the proper research when I pass these quilts on to them.
