I'm in the Florida Keys

Staying in the Keys for a month and am an avid quilter. I will visit the Seam Shoppe in Key West but was wondering if there are any more interesting places or people to see about quilting! Thanks! (I am sewing in my camper!) Teresa

We were in the Keys for one week celebrating our 30th anniverary and had a wonderful time! The Seam Shoppe is the only quilt shop in the Florida Keys - I checked this all out before leaving our home in Central Florida! Do enjoy the sights in the Keys: Dry Tortugas National Park, Key West Lighthouse, Southernmost Point, and walking down Duval Street. There are lots of museums too and history! Have a wonderful time! Make sure you get to see the Key deer as well!

When you're on Big Pine looking for the key deer ( seen mostly at dusk -do drive very slowly!) stop at the No Name Pub for pizza & wings!
Also on Big Pine they have a gigantic flea market every Sat & Sun.
Enjoy!
Hugs, Terry

Thanks so much. We will go to the flea market this weekend since we spend 3 nights at Bahia Honda State park starting Saturday . We went to Key West today - went to the Seam Shoppe - they have moved across the street and have a nicer brighter store now. Keep suggestions coming!!

Have fun sewing in your camper.

Yes, Seam Shoppe only shop in the Keys, but there is also a Ben Franklin right on US 1 Gulf side and they have a nice selection of fabric. I also am in the Keys for the winter and I shop there alot. Not quite as expensive as Seam Shoppe. I don't know if the flea market is open yet on Big Pine. If itr is, not all the dealers are there til the middle of Jan.

We will be in the keys for a week starting Jan 12. Is the Ben Franklin in Key West?

busygranny 12-22-2012 06:17 AM

Yes, Ben Franklin is in Key West. Where will you be staying when you are staying? Wea re in Long Key.

jeanharville 12-22-2012 01:39 PM

We'll be spending some time in Key Largo and a couple of days in Key West. I don't know where our reservations are.

When my son was stationed down in the Keys a few years ago I was able to go down there and spent 2 full weeks down there with son and family. I got to see the Key deer up close , watched them trying to eat the bananas hanging down from the banana tree. I even got a picture of one trying to take a piece of banana out of my son's hand as he was squatting down under the stairs.

I live on Cujoe Key. The last time I was in Ben Franklin in November they didn't have much fabric. :( The Seam Shoppe is about it. Cindy, the owner is very nice. Their new store, across from the old store, is nice.

To see Key Dear go to No Name Key. You can see them any time of the day, the best time is in the morning or dusk. You have to go to Big Pine Key to get to No Name Key. The No Name Pub has great smoked fish dip and wonder pizza. I have not been to the Big Pine Key Flea Market in a while. They should be starting back up.

Love Bahia Honda State Park. The best beach in the keys.

Somewhere close to the Theater of the Sea, which is nice, is a great craft place I forget the name. Sorry.

Hope you enjoy your time in the keys.

We have a friend who lives on Cujoe, his name is Bob Boyd. He and his friend play island music in Key West. Do you know him?

jeanharville 12-23-2012 05:42 AM

DH just corrected me. Bob lives on Sugarloaf key.

We went to the Seam Shoppe when we were on our honeymoon last September. We stayed on Isla Morada in the "Jetson's" house. We had a wonderful time. We went Theatre of the Sea and had a great time!

If you're still in the keys and haven't found it yet, there's a yarn shop in Key West within walking distance from where the cruise ships dock. When I visited there in 2011, we had to walk up some steps to get to it. It was near an eating establishment I think. I think it was on the main street in Key West.

jeanharville 01-08-2013 06:07 PM

We will be leaving tomorrow on our vaca. Since I like to knit and crochet I"ll check out the yarn shop and will keep a lookout for fabric shops on the other keys driving down. It's raining here now and looks like it will continue for a couple more days. So we're looking forward to the sunshine.

If you are in Key Largo the first Saturday of the month we have a guild meeting at the Library, you'll meet lots of quilters and get lots of ideas of where to go and what to see, 10:00 amish (island time)

jeanharville 01-08-2013 06:27 PM

Gosh, I would love that, but we will be back home by then. Thanks for the invitation though.

I'd recommend a visit to the Mel Fisher museum to see incredible gold and silver treasure from the wreck of the Atocha if you get a chance.
