Soup is on!

Just finished getting two pots of soup going. Got a bean soup (lobster pot size). And a split pea (Dutch oven size). Now I can sew, scrapbook and clean my sewing room with out much interruption for a couple of days!! Only two of us here but I freeze some and will take some to older friends that don't cook much. Four days off from work so I should get something done!!

Me, too! I just bought a package of the 26 bean mix and a ham hock. I plan to fix it with hot sourdough bread tomorrow. I just love a good thick soup this time of year.....especially after it has aged a few days.....:). And it smells so good while it is simmering.......

I made turkey stew the day after Christmas, it lasted the week. So last night I baked a ham along with scalloped potatoes and green been casserole. So we have plenty of left overs for today and tomorrow.

Can't do the ham hocks and beans - we ate that so much when I was little, I promised myself as an adult I would never have to eat it gain. My older sister thinks it is wonderful. I love green lima beans, but not the dried version. I give my ham bones to a friend that likes the split pea soup. So it works out well.

I really love minestrone soup - need to think about making that next weekend....... Winter is so wonderful for stews and soups.

Black-eyed peas with ham. Cornbread and a side of cabbage (in my case Japanese-style pancakes.) Except for the pancakes, can you guess I'm a southerner?

quiltingnonie 01-01-2012 06:32 PM

I made Shrimp Bisque last week, and today made a pot of Split Pea and Ham soup. (Both the shrimp & ham was leftover from the holidays)

Yes, I can tell you are from TX. We had Black-eyed peas with ham and cornbread. And Cabbage wrapped pork with sourkraute made by our neighbor (not a southern dish, though).

Potato or broccoli cheese soup!

luvstoquilt 01-02-2012 06:29 AM

I wish I had time to make a pot of soup. Unfortunately a family emergency has come up and I will be traveling. Those soups all sound so delicious and comforting. I made pork and saurkraut about a month ago and loved it. I froze the leftover..never did that before..does anyone know if it will still taste good after freezing it?

Have never eaten cold butter bean sandwiches, but often have made cold baked bean sandwiches. Use to send them in DH's lunch. After he got over his surprise at the first sandwich he likes them.

ohhh now this sounds good. I have done with with sausage but not the pork roast.
Could you share the recipe please?

Last night we had bean soup made with a meaty hambone and assorted beans plus a good dose of black-eyed peas for luck. I made a huge batch so we would have several meals in the freezer. Since we had left over cornbread from last night, this morning I made a batch of Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili. I found the recipe on EatingWell.com. It smells wonderful!

tenngal 01-02-2012 01:34 PM

How timely! I made over 2 gallons of Brunswick Stew this morning because it is the first snowfall of the year and I needed to get warm!

tenngal 01-02-2012 01:35 PM

I also made skinless smoked sausage with kraut in the crockpot today - enough for 2 dinners wioth mashed potatoes.

Slow2Sew 01-09-2012 10:30 AM
