We're in the process of moving and the upstairs of the house we're moving to is only over part of the house and is one large room. The stairway kind of divides it into a smaller side and a larger side. There are two large lighted closets, one on each side. There are five windows in the upstairs, three face east, one north, and one south, so it's nice and bright. We're renting the house (it's a long sad story, but we lost our home :-( ). The upstairs wasn't finished when the new owner, our landlord, bought it, so he finished the walls and trim, built the closets, finished the stairway (the stairs were open to the basement before ), painted the walls and ceiling, and had carpet laid. I saw it before he started work on it and I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

I'm going to use the larger side for my sewing room and the smaller side will be a sitting/TV area and play area for my granddaughters, Cleo, age 8, and Morgan, age 4 1/2. I plan to keep their toys and stuff in the closet on that side. We also plan to put our bookshelves and books upstairs, unless I can find a spot for them downstairs. I'd like to put our desk up there, but I don't think it will work unless we get a smaller desk. I'm not sure about that yet.

When I was taking the girls upstairs to show it to them, I told them part of the room would be their play area and part would be my sewing area. As soon as Morgan saw it, she said gleefully that I could have the small area and she and Cleo would get the larger area. Uh, no, sweetie!

The only problem with my sewing room being upstairs is that I have a lot of arthritis in my knees, feet, back, hips, well, some of you know what I mean! My right knee's gotten so bad that I have to use a cane. Unfortunately, the steps are higher than normal (8 1/2 inches), plus the stairway is steep. We're either going to add a second bannister so I can keep a cane upstairs and use both hands to help pull myself up the stairs (I guess I'll put anything that needs to go up or down in a bag around my neck  ) or my DH is going to buy or make a stairclimber. We've seen them reasonably priced on ebay, but our budget is so tight right now we really can't get one. But Paul thinks he can build one for about $150. He's very talented and clever and I think he can do it. He drew the plans up and built a 10-foot high ferris wheel with four seats for our DGD's, so I'm sure he can do this. I just hope he doesn't set it so it flings me off the seat when I reach the top or anything like that. :|

When I went upstairs to take pics, he came with me to measure to begin planning it. He laid down to think about how it would work, then complained when I kept taking pictures. I told him he knew I was going to take pictures, so he'd just have to be in them. So he is. (I think he was afraid everyone would think he was resting or sleeping, but I told him I'd tell you he was thinking/planning. )

Small side, will be TV/sitting/playing area.

Looking from small side to part of larger size. DH is thinking, not resting!

What a great area for a sewing room :D:D:D It will be nice that your DGD's will have a place right next to you too.

More pics.

This is where I'll set up my sewing area.

A few more:

We'll put bookshelves on this wall and between the windows.

This is the only wall space available for a design wall. It's 77" by 77".

Inside of the closet on my side. I hope to fill it with fabric!

Last pics, I promise!

Taken from my side. Paul's still thinking.

Since you insist, here's a pic of Morgan and Cleo.

Paul, me, and the girls. (I don't know if Paul's thinking here or not.)

Thanks, Amma! I really like that there's enough room for their play area. Hopefully they'll become interested in sewing and I can teach them. Morgan has shown more interest than Cleo so far. We'll see.

We keep putting the move off, but now we've set next Saturday as the "big" moving day. I can't wait to get everything upstairs and arranged. I'm excited!

I'm sorry to hear that you've lost your house but this setup looks perfect once you solve the stairs issue. It is a bright space and looks like it has more than enough room for your plans!
Good luck,

What a great place and your granddaughters will be close by. I hope Paul gets your stair climber working post haste.
