I've seen that block recently, but I can't for the life of me recall its name. I'm sure someone here will located it long before I get home to my books to look it up for you!

It's beautiful, thought it might be Sister's Choice on point, but I see it's not (here's the link to that one & it's a 9 patch in the center) http://www.quiltville.com/sisterschoice.shtml

Could you show us a picture of a wider area of the quilt?

I'm almost thinking that the quilt could have been made of alternating blocks.

The center 9-patch looks similar to something called "Weathervane" in Barbara Brackman's book, "Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns.

There is a version of page 224 (Number 1780) and one on page 499 (Number 4033). They are pieced differently and Brackman credits different designers for the two of them.

I think it looks like a variation of Arrow Crown turned or Maine Woods. Both are in Maggie Malones' book.

The "flower" part looks like it's drafted on a 3x3 or 6x6 grid. The other part that I think of as "sashing" or an alternate block looks like it's drafted on an 8x8 grid.

Those two would be easy to work with on 12-inch (finished size) block.

Looks like Weathervane (Maggie Malone, p.39 #425)
