I was asked to make a Scottish themed quilt for a lady in Australia. The plan was for various soft blue shades to be used with some family tartan in the mix. I came up with the idea of a CRM theme for the front with Rabbie Burns on the back to cover Glasgow where she grew up and Alloa in Ayrshire where her family originates from. Before moving to Australia the family lived across the road from Queen's Cross Church, now the CRM Museum and Centre. The centre panel is an elevation of this building which of course was designed by the man himself. The couple in the doorway is Amy and her husband. They were actually married in Australia so I took a huge dollop of poetic justice in relocating the wedding!
The quilt top is not quite what I set out to make but I've promised to confine the back to the soft colours and hues of the Ayrshire countryside. I spent two days trying to match up the tartan fabric where they cross over. It drove me nuts and three times it went wrong. It was marginally less wrong on my fourth attempt so covered the worst of it with tartan hearts! I didn't know what else to do!? The tartan is fabulous but it's much more difficult to work with than cotton. I'm not really sure if the experience has made me any wiser about how to work with this lightweight wool fabric!
