My mom used to do this to embellish aprons edges. I never learned from her, but always loved the look. Thanks for the link. :)

I love Chicken Scratch! I've only done small things though - not a whole quilt! Very impressive!

I saw a quilt that someone had done in black and white using this exact same pattern once and fell in love with it. It has been on my list of things to learn for a while but until now, I had never seen it again. Your work is beautiful!

When clearing out my mother's house after her death, I found about 20 large blocks of chicken scratch. The gingham colors were orange, red, black, lavender, purple, green, and a lime green. I put these blocks in a quilt with a white sashing. The back was made with strips of various colors of gingham also found in her house. I love the quilt because of the memories of my Mother but also because my sister helped her with this project when she was a young child.

Rexie, yes I quilt around the star, and inside of it too. The back is just as pretty as the front. If you read all the responds, you will fine websites to see how it is done. Thanks to everyone who answered my post. Wonderful and talanted people at this quilt board. Love to look at all the pretty quilts and I am learning so much.
