I inherited this Singer treadle sewing machine from my grandparents. My mother says she remembers seeing her grandmother using it when she was a child. It has some condition issues, the belt is gone and the cabinet is flaking some. Inside, there was a fabulous button collection and a bunch of thread, still on the old wooden spools. There were about 6 spools of silk thread besides. :) I don't know anything about these machines and don't know what I should know to care for it or use it possibly. Any info would be much appreciated!

I have to agree. WOW!!!! That is certainly a treasure! I wonder how you could have it assessed and possible insured.

The funny part about it is that it was something that none of my aunts or uncles wanted and so the family put it on the auction. I told my dad that I wanted it and when it wasn't selling on the auction, he bought it back for $20 and gave it to me. Maybe I should do some research on it and see what I can learn. I thought I saw some real Singer buffs on this sight so I was hoping someone knew something about these machines. I'm thrilled to have it. :lol:

If I'm reading the serial number right your machine was made in Elizabeth , NJ around 1917. I think this is the one they call the Red Eye. there is a group called TreadleOn that has tons of info on restoring and using old people powered machines. They have an email list, yearly get togethers, block exchanges, and so on. I went to the get together near me just a couple of months ago and took the treadle that I had bought. They helped me get it running and I found the parts it needed there. I'm doing the fall block exchange on it now. These are the blocks I've done.

As soon as I finish the lap quilt top I'm working on I plan on trying some free motion quilting on mine.

I just got an old Singer for free- yours looks even prettier than mine! Someone on here posted a link to a website where you can use that ID number to find out where and when your machine was made. I'll go find the thread and get the link for you.
