I decided I needed some everyday fall placemats so I rummaged through my stash and found some leftover leaf print from tablerunners I had made for gifts. I looked in my 5 inch square box and found two more fabrics that looked good with it. I finally decided to just pick out enough other coordinating prints to make 6 placemats. I trimmed all the squares to 4 1/2 inches as that would give me the size I needed. I did Disappearing 9-Patch for my blocks and used 1 and 1/2 blocks per mat. I used flannel leftovers for the batting because they didn't have to match as it would be hidden inside! I didn't have anything big enough for binding, so I topped stitched the edges with a decorating border. I now have 6 placemats that cost nothing!
