Dear all,
I made two of these quilts for my Mother and MIL this year for Grandparent's Day--it was on Sept. 12. With me back at work now, it took a little longer than I anticipated.

My Mom took her quilt to work yesterday and the orders just flew in! Everyone wanted one. Now for the question? what to charge. I looked up other picture quilt services online and it looks like the going rate is approx. $10 picture. My mom said that people at work probably won't pay that. I don't want to short change myself, but the extra $$$ would be nice right now. Should I start out offering a "discount" for "coworkers" until I can get established? That way in a few months I can charge more? I know people are REALLY hurting with the economy right now.

thanks!
Rose

I might say, okay I'll make the quilts for $100, no more than 5 pics. If you do it cheap so you can have volume you'll regret it and hate to finish them when you realize you're only making a very few bucks.
BTW, the kids and quilts are adorable

The going rate is your cost x 3 plus your time. I know that making the photos on fabric is not cheap.

Beautiful work. I love to make quilts with family pictures. Want to do a wallhanging for my daughter of her school pics but don't know where she would hang it. What kind of a printer do you use? Do you do your own fabric or do you use the package fabric for photos? I did a large quilt for my mother after my Dad passed and it was beautiful. Quite a healing process. I know pricing your work is hard, but take into consideration how much you ink costs to print these pictures and people who don't quilt don't realize the price of fabric, thread, etc. - not to mention your time. Goodluck.

Figure cost of ink, wear and tear on printer, cost of fabric sheets, cost of batting, cost of border and backing and binding fabric, just thinking about it makes me think 10$ a picture is reasonable.

What I would suggest is that you do up a little pamphlet or paper just breaking down how much you have to acutally have to purchase to make the quilts and that might make the cost more understandable.

They are darling!
