Hi girls
I need help I'll repost both pictures of the two quilts I just finished last month. The lady loves the first one but the second one she says is to plain and not as bright as the first one. She send the shirts and blouses and was very specific for the first one and didn't say much about the second one. I put mostly her moms clothes and evidently not enough of dads and it has too much white in it. I used what she gave me. Do I re charge her to re do it? I don't want to take it apart she suggests adding blocks on top which would ruin it. I used as many of the dads clothes as was left from the first quilt. any ideas are welcome.

This is the one she doesn't like because it isn't bright enough

Has she thought that their clothes were not that bright....goodness I would not know what to say about this. Guess that is why I am so reluctant to make quilts for others. However I have not been that long peicing tops.
Good luck
Beth

Well, this is what i would do. The second quilt is very whitewashed, but you also couldnt have known what she wanted. You shouldnt re-charge her, because someone not liking it is a risk you take, but i would say this, maybe to avoid this in the future, maybe take a layout photo before sewing, and have person see it first, just an idea. Anyways, this is what i would do, the blue rows on the second one are what i would change. It wont be hard to do at all, and the quilt will still be nice. Try and replace those blue squares with something floral, like the pink floral in the first quilt, or that pretty pink strip was nice too. All you have to do is this, cut your squares out, press the edges under, and then hand applique the squares onto the quilt, and nobody will be able to tell, the quilt will be very nice. So sorry this happened to you, but no, i wouldnt charge her, consider it a lesson learned, and take photos along the way next time.

Thank you, yes, I sent pictures of both quilts to her before mailing them. I have already decided to send pictures of just the layout next time, to see if they want changes. I have done dozens of quilts for people and this is the first time this has happened. Of course, this one is long distance for me, I'm in In. and she is in Ca. I have never showed the layout or anything to anyone before. They give me their t shirts or whatever, I ask about the color for the sashing and size they want and the color for the backing and the rest is for my judgment. They have always been happy before.
She does not want me to do anything with the one she likes but wants to send new shirts to add color the one she doesn't like. I think they both are colorful enough but I'll do what she needs. Thanks for the advice.

What a bummer, Bernadette! I would indeed charge her if she wants you to redo it. Your time is NOT free. However, I would get her to agree on a price before you do it. :D :D

(I liked them both.......)

Goodness--you were working with what she gave you. And the whole idea behind this is not how bright it is, but how comforting it is. Right?

I'd definitely charge more if she wants it redone. You did as you were asked--and if she needs a change, it should be on her bill.

What if you appliqued hearts--bright ones--in the white squares?

Maybe quilt it with a bright thread?

I'm sorry you didn't get raving reviews--I think you did great.

You used what she sent you. This isn't a result of her disliking your work. It's a product of her changing her mind and not liking what she thought she would.

I work as a contracts administrator for a large general contractor. When an owner decides he doesn't like the paint color after it's on the wall, there is a charge for additional labor and materials to change it. As long as the quality of work is there, this is on someone else, not you.

I'd explain to her that extra time will cost. I made a quilt for a lady years ago and after she changed it the 6th time I said no it's done because I had other quilts scheduled. with the holidays fast approaching, you'll be running yourself ragged and that takes the fun out of them.

Thank you all for your input. I told I would fix it for free this one more time and would send pictures of it laid out before I sew them. And that it will be a one time thing. I will hand sew them over the top of the others if that works out. We will have to see what she sends me to work with. I just want to get it right this time. I won't be doing anything for her anymore though she has been nice, I just don't have time to do things twice. Thanks again everyone.
