I thought I'd share my first attempt at quilting and applique. I began it about 15 years ago - a king size! What was I thinking. Its all hand stitched. Still in the process of hand quilting. None of the "flowers" is exactly the same.

The little one I made in 2004 for my first grandson. Don't laugh. As I look at it now, I wonder why its so "plain". The cow is made from the scraps of her wedding and MOH's gown alterations and the Moon is from my wedding dress.

I love making "scrappy" quilts or applique quilts from clothes that have meaning. When my girlfriends husband passed several years ago, I helped her "clean out the closets and draws". As she did, she would stop and tell a story about a particular shirt or old swim suit a tie. I threw those in a separate pile later cutting them up and making a quilt for her and pillows for her four children.

Some think it morbid, but some love holding/wrapping themselves in the "love".

Nothing like jumping in with both feet - a GFG for a first attempt is unreal! Good Job!

Thank you so much JJ for your kind comments. Ya, I guess I jumped in a bit over my head. I tend to jump into the deep end of things without looking.

I love your quilts. I think it is a great gift you made your girlfriend. Something she will cherish forever. I made a quilt for my son's friend out of baby clothes and pictures. Her son had down syndrome and passed away very young.

Beautiful quilt. Not morbid in my book-they are true treasures!

I don't think it morbid, its holding a memory. When my mother passed away she had so many beautiful sweatshirts that I couldn't give a way. So I made pillowcases out of them and gave them to sil and nieces and nephews. They each have a piece of her. I did it with my sisters t-shirts when she passed away also.

Oh, that was so kind of you. It must have been such a treasure, particularly with the photos included.

That's a great idea - I like to make pillow cases for the kids. I wish I had had access to my mom's clothes when she passed. It would have been nice to make something from them. I only have a hat that was my dads. I put it in plastic because it still smells like him after 20 years! It makes me feel comfortable :)
