I spent about 20 minutes with Eileen Trestain's "Dating Fabric A Color Guide 1800-1960" looking at the samples in the book and at your quilt's fabrics.

Though I couldn't identify specific fabrics, your quilt has the feel of the 1840-1880 period with its stripes, plaids, and umbre' prints. Is it possible, or even apparent that the browns may have been purples at one time? Because the dye was fugitive it may have turned brown and not seem purple at all. A chemical purple didn't appear until 1862.

I also have Trestain's book "Dating Fabrics A Color Guide 1950-2000" and in looking through her examples of the 1950-1960 period, they just don't "feel" like yours look, even though some plaids are evident in both eras.

Hope you have it evaluated by an appraiser who can see it up close; and that you tell us about it! I'm curious!

i WISH i KNEW HOW MUCH AN APPRASIAL would cost.
I found this tossed on the ground at a garage sale.
Cost $1.00
I just had a feeling it had value.

Love it! I think appraisals start around $50'ish. I think it would be worth it to have it done.

Here in VA you could get an appraisal for quite a bit less than $50. There are several different kinds of appraisals, too; for insurance purposes; for donating to a museum; just for information; to determine age/date/details, etc. It sounds like you are just interested in an evaluation for approx. age, right?

There are several reasons this top likely does not have much value.
Your top is incomplete.
There is no "quilting" to evaluate.
It may have been made in different periods, and by different people.
It does not have specialized or intricate piecing in the body or borders.
The workmanship may be 'okay' at best.
It may have fabrics from different periods.
You have no provenance about it.

This is not to say it isn't a quilt top worth loving and saving! But, of financial value? Probably less than you would hope.

If you are interested I can send the name/number of an AQS Certified Appraiser here in VA who could at least tell you how/where to go from here.

Tho the fabric is possibly dating back that far, looking at the cuts, I don't think they were that precise when they did their cutting!! I could be wrong, but looks like someone definitely had some good rulers to cut that with!!
