Wow! It's been a while since I checked this! I apologize for not responding promptly. The diamond shape around the medallion is pieced. The only things that were appliqued were the letters for Hakuna Matata, the heads of the giraffes (you can't see it but I actually embroidered eyelashes on them!), the symbols in the upper right (background was pieced), the symbols in the two bottom corners, and Baby Simba and Baby Nala, of course.

So glad you checked back on the Quilting Board as I have never seen your quilt before. What an awesome quilt it is! That should have been entered in the International Quilt Festival. Amazing!!!

If you haven't done so already please make a small booklet with all this information and a picture of the quilt as a cover and insert. This is a good history to be passed down with this quilt. Even if the quilt is loved to death the booklet will tell the story when the love of this quilt is shared from one generation to the next. Such a beautiful quilt and humbling history.

Actually, I made a small booklet when I made the quilt and gave it to the parents. I made an animal alphabet quilt for the father's twin brother had his first child a few years earlier (my second quilt). Some of the animals were rather obscure, so I thought I would type something up to name all of them. Ended up writing, printing and binding a small children's book for them. I'll post that later if I can find it.
