thank you all for the kind words.

barnbum, this pattern was the very first quilt i ever made. i took a class at a quilt shop and i made this in a twin size. we followed eleanor burns book and the teacher gave us a few short cut tips. the best tip she gave us was to use an ANGLER to sew the star points instead of having to draw a diagonal line on each 2 inch square you just line up the corners with the grid of the angler and sew straight across. very much quicker than having to draw those lines.
since then i have made several log cabins and this is the third one i have make with the stars. it isn't harder just more time consuming.

i've made more quilts than i can count or rmember. guess what ...

i STILL struggle to get each one done! I always make at least 3 boneheaded mistakes during each project. I usually waste at least one yard of fabric and have a few blocks left because (a) they came out too wrong to fix; and/or (b) i lost them (i think the dogs hide them because they're jealous of my sewing machine  ) and I never find them until i'd made replacements.

MY quilting tool kit includes two sizes of seam rippers and a pair of tweezers for pulling the little bits of thread.

i decided a long time ago to accept that mistakes - for me anyway - are inevitable. I try to turn them to my advantage. I always learn something new (or am reminded of something important i forgot). someday, they will each be a chapter in a book. i'll bet it sells like hotcakes!!!

The Angler is without a doubt, the best invention. I have the Angler 2 and it allows you to make flying geese, square in a square, anything involving diagonal seams, and by using it, you don't have to draw a line. I get perfect results everytime. See the link:

I got mine at Joanns and with a coupon, it was only a couple of dollars. You can also use it and your regular presser foot and get great 1/4" seams.

Nanabirdmo, I didn't mean to step on your toes, I'm just really enthusiastic with this tool and the time it saves.

patrice,
i thought i was the only quilter who made boneheaded mistakes.
it seems like i will be going along smooth as silk and suddenly realize i have sewn something completely bassackwards. my seam ripper is the tool i love to hate. what would i do without it. wish i didn't need it, but i always will. with every project.
any new quilter who gets discouraged should peruse this board and you will realize we all tend to make silly, dumb, thoughtless, and boneheaded mistakes from time to time. (and not just in quilting  ) don't give up. just un-sew and plunge ahead. wish it was as easy to unsew parts of my life and start over 8) compared to real life, quilting is easy
