Default Memory Quilt - "It's Never Too Late"

This is a memory quilt that I made for my Dad and new step-mom, Daury. It is the pictures from their wedding reception. The original intent was to take a picture of everyone there and then have them sign a quilt block. Like most of my plans, it didn't "pan-out" and I ended up with pictures and no blocks and blocks with no pictures. So I had to re-think my plan and this is what I came up with.

I had intended to give this to them shortly after they were married, but some-how life got in the way. Actually, I am a terrible procrastinator! This year was their 4th anniversary and so I got the top finished. My step-mom loved it. She made me promise I would have it finished in time for the county fair. She passed away one month before the fair (I hate cancer), but the quilt was finished in time, I kept my promise. It placed 1st in the Memory Quilt category (I am really not sure how many were entered - it may have been the only one) but it also received Reserved Champion.

The label was the following poem and you will see why it is called "It's Never Too Late".

It is never too late

Dedicated to Daury “Grammy” Booth
July 28, 1936 - August 26, 2014

“I will never remarry”, they said with a straight face
But marry they did; true love found in God’s grace

You are never too old to live, laugh and love
For those are our gifts from Heaven above

A promise is a promise – a vow we must keep
Till death do us part, the promise complete

Like most procrastinators, I waited too late
But she did see the top in its unfinished state

Her joy and delight to see family and friends
The blessings and greetings; only love can transcend

She made me promise this quilt would compete
So win, lose or draw; my promise I’ll keep

So whether you made a promised a long time ago
Or you think you are too old to bask in love’s glow

Don’t live with regrets, I am telling you straight
Live life to the fullest, it is never too late

Made for Daddy and Daury

Such a beautiful quilt and I'm sure that it will be cherished for many years to come. I made one several years ago for my mother. Gave it to her in October and she passed away in January. I had planned to keep it until her birthday in January but something told me to give it to her early and I'm so glad I did.

I am so glad you listened to the "still, small voice". I have cried a river because my step-mom never got to enjoy hers.

Ditto to all that has been said. Beautiful poem and quilt. At least she got to see the unfinished top and all the love that was went into it. BrendaK

Wonderful quilt and marvelous poem to go with it. What wonderful memories for your father and you of a eventful time. She is looking down from heaven each time the quilt is admired.
