My second completed quilt, for my son

My second completed quilt, for my son
I'm new to quilting, just started this summer. I'm doing both hand quilting and machine quilting, depending on the quilt.
I made this quilt this week for my son, to use as a "couch quilt". He's tall, so I made it nice and long so it would cover his feet, ended up about 54" x 80". I backed it with fleece to make it really snuggly, and find that the width of the fleece makes a good size for napping/lounging. No batting, since the machine I'm working with has a small throat and would be too bulky to fit.
I worked without a pattern, just an idea of what I wanted, and the templates I had determined the width of the squares and strips (a 6" wide template and a 2 1/2" binding template, that I love). I wanted fast and easy to keep building my motivation. I used a zigzag stitch for the quilting, one, because I like it, and two, it will help hold my seams if I have a seam a little on the short side. I hope it wears well and he can use it for a long time to come!
I gave it to him to unwrap when the binding was half done, and told him I'd finish it after we did presents. So, at 11 at night on Christmas, it was all done (he didn't get off work until 7).
The colors are most "true" near the bottom of the photo. I used a Kona Black, some of the first fabric I bought-- two pieces from the remnants bin at JAF, and two "Halloweenies BOM quilt backing fabric" for the blue (there was a sale on Keepsake Quilting). I was happy there was enough of the blue fabric for the binding, and I still have some pretty scraps leftover.
