I don't have a pic of my first quilt - not sure where it is... I guess DH has it somewhere at his parents house?? It's pretty similar to this one, just smaller. This is the second one I made for him since the first was too small. It pretty much covers the top of a queen size mattress from edge to edge, a good fit for a twin. Just a basic 12" block made from a cardboard template and cut with scissors - needless to say they were anything but square! My grandma helped me, but let me do 99% of it myself (she was there to tear out the seams when I messed up, which was often since I was tired and sick throughout most of the process  ). Each print material has a meaning behind it and I tried to coordinate the colors the best I could. I don't think any of the seams match up, I didn't know anything about seam allowance or anything. I just sewed them up in rows! The "batting" is a mixture of old flannel sheets, an old table cloth, and one or two other things (I was either a senior in HS or a freshman in college when I made it over Christmas break - either way not exactly rolling in the dough!). It's heavy to say the least, but DH still uses it! I tied it at each corner to try and cover up those obvious mistakes! I also didn't know how to do binding, and was totally stumped so I got some iron on tape stuff and used it to finish it off. I noticed that some of it is starting to some undone so I guess I need to fix it. I guess everyone has to start somewhere, right?

That's love - on both of your parts - that you would make it for the man you love and he would still use it, plus I think it's very pretty. I like the colors and it reminds me of my very 1st quilt...nothing but 9 in solid blocks with green strips between rows with SID method to attach it to a fleece blanket I used as the back (and batting just because it felt nice and it would never be shown, just cuddled under). The only pic I have is with my kitty, Shannon, staking her claim...that is where she always slept on it. Now my step-son has taken it over and uses it every time we have him, wherever the 10 year old crashes. They must instinctively know when love is the main ingredient.

Your first quilt is great! The fact that the fabric has special meaning makes it even more remarkable. It will be exciting to see what you create next!

P.S. I wasn't crazy about my first quilt, but our dog really loved it ... literally loved it to pieces!

I like that each piece has meaning for you! I looks like you did a good job on it. It's the love you put in it when you made it that counts! I like the cow print - would you mind telling me what that means to you? (I had a co print phase.) And any of the others you might want to share? The first quilt I made was made from leftovers from clothing that I had made for my husband and myself. I tied that one, too, since I didn't know anything about actual quilting at the time.

I have started venturing out into more actual patterns... I have more pics, but I guess they are on the other hard drive. I'll have to see if I can find them. These are two that I made as gifts - the red and white irish chain was a baby blanket for one of DH's buddies from NC State (the red has State basketball and football all over it). The birdhouse was for DH's grandmother, the edges were quilted in rows so it can be a memory/signature quilt of sorts. I have their family tree started on it with them, their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren so far. She has it on the chair in their living room. I have done a handful more... I'll have to find the other pics so I can have them all together. I think I have a picture of all the ones I have made up until this point, but my first was on regular film and I have no idea where the picture is right now!

Oh sure! I can tell more about it! I tend to be a "talker" so I try not to overdo it unless asked

-The cow and John Deere prints are b/c he grew up helping his grandfather on the farm and feels that has shaped his life more than any other experience in his life... his grandparents mean a LOT to him. Also a funny cow story with me that he will never let me live down... I was helping him gets some cows up when we first started dating. He told me to just stand at the gate to make sure they went in. I had never been that close to a cow, I guess I never realized how big they were. Anyway, when they came running towards me, I got scared and hid behind a bush/tree which he found absolutely hilarious!
-The stars and stripes were b/c we met/started dating in July.
-The outdoorsy one was the only one I could find with fish in it at the time, and he's a fisherman.
-The music instruments b/c we met at music camp (did long distance the first 3 years, not easy when starting out I was only 15 with no license and he was 16 and couldn't drive over state lines by himself (not sure if that was the state law, or his moms).
-The angels in the corner b/c I was going to a school where that was the mascot.
-The "love" one, well, that's kind of obvious I guess.
-The winter one, I think it was b/c we had finally played in the snow together?? When dating LD we never had that opportunity.
-The light blue text/snowflake is Christmas sayings, which is our favorite holiday and also when I gave him the quilt.

Can you tell I like squares?? Triangles scare me a bit, but I have one double pinwheel top in progress, and another Calico puzzle top about done. Starting to venture out a bit more each time!
