Default New 4-H Quilter Wins a Special Ribbon!

I have to share this with you all--I have been leading a 4-H project group in quilting this year. This quilted bag was made by the youngest girl in the group, a 12-year-old! With my help, she learned to draw her own pattern on freezer paper. Then she selected her fabrics an did all the construction. She learned to cut with a rotary cutter, match her corners when piecing (and rip them out and try again when she missed), and put in a full lining with a zippered pocket inside! Throughout the process she would occasionally ask, "will the judges look at this" when referring to a detail she didn't feel was just right. I would tell her, "yes, they probably will". Then she would do her best to make it right.

All of her effort and attention to detail paid off!

Here is a picture of her bag displayed in the 4-H building at the county fair last weekend.

Congratulations to you both. A job well done. I was sewing my own clothes by the time I was 11. My mom taught me the value of matching seams and how to use a ripper. I still can't draft my own patterns if they aren't a flat piece, but admire those that can. I still have to match my seams to within a 16th of an inch, unless it's under a belt, then I can go 1/8". LOL A lot of years sewing garments and now I sew quilts. Thanks to you, fabric and sewing will probably be a part of this young girl's life forever. I am so glad you shared this with us.
