hey barn, wasn't it the velveteen rabbit that said it was love that made him real? i think it is the same for our early efforts that are loved by the kids in our lives. i know my grandson has an old quilt that is held together mostly by the mends and he is 18 and would not part with that unsightly but much loved quilt for anything.
i love your first quilt and i love that you are still at it. thanks for sharing.

Karla it's beautiful because of the love that went into it. Technically speaking now of course your work is 'better' but the love is what can't be taught or learned and that was there from the beginning. It's wonderful that both your kids appreciate that. :-D

Just the fact that you did it all by hand impresses me! I have a SIL who machine pieces but hand quilts all hers. They are beautiful, but take way too long for my short attention span.

It also makes me smile that your 19 year old daughter still treasures it--how lucky you both are.

.....But, you finished it. That was my thoughts when I taught myself to crochet. I had my first attempt in a bag hidden away and one day, about thirty years after beginning it, I finished it. A complete layette for my first child who is forty. Maybe for my first great grand??? But you finished it.

I saw my mother in law make quilts from nothing and that got me started. I like ,you , learned all by myself. I bought a book and got started back in 1975. I have now taken a couple of applique classes and think I have come a long way and now do a great job. The first ones were terrible.

Several thoughts crossed my mind reading your post...
1) Thank heavens for rotary cutters we use today
2) how sweet that your 19 yo still cherishes this quilt after so many years and has 'loved it to pieces'
3) She's happy to have it repaired to have to love to pieces some more.

thanks for sharing, tugs at the heartstrings...

warm quilt hugs, sue in CA

I love it!!! Apparently DD does too :D:D:D
Isn't it wonderful to go back and see how far we have come, but even our firsts are as well loved and used as our last:D:D:D
