Default Orange and blue Kaleidoscope circle quilt "Tropical Parrotise"

This is a client quilt. I posted a sneak peek here: http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...g-t273474.html

This quilt took my breath away! I positively loved it. All the circles are constructed kaleidoscope style. A stack and whack type approach. Every circle has 24 wedges in it and every wedge is fussy cut from the same repeat of fabric. The center of each circle has a smaller 6 wedge circle, also fussy cut to form another secondary design, hand appliqued in. Then every circle has a prepared bias strip hand appliqued to frame it. Then the border. WOW. Partial circles, also fussy cut from the same repeat alternated to form that fabulous serpentine. The quilt will finish with a scalloped binding. A show stopper for sure.

With all that negative space in the background I wanted to do some drop dead quilting to compliment all that work in the circles and border. I sent my client a couple of sketches of what I had in mind and then this baby took on a life of its own. LOL I started referring to the quilt as "Tropical Parrotise" a play on the word paradise and the focus fabric which was parrots in a tropical rain forest. The orange background reminded me of an island sunset. So I started out calling it "The Parrot" and that morphed into Tropical Parrotise. I don't know what the quilts name will be, that is just what I called it.

There is a big Mariner's compass style star radiating from the center circle. Then all the outer circles have rings of flying geese quilted around them as well as flying geese hugging the border. I duplicated the same motif that I quilted in the pieced circles on several spots in the background then filled it all in with circles of various sizes. Some are as large as 2 1/2" across and some as little as 1/4".

The quilting is all hand guided and free motion quilting. Done on my 26" Innova longarm. There are two layers of Hobbs Polydown. Glide thread and Sigma thread (both 40 wt poly). all the circles are ditched on both sides of the blue bias (not easy but looks awesome) as well as the border. Loads of ruler work. The hook swirl circle motif was inspired by Sue Heinz design.

I wish I had a space large enough in my house to photograph the whole quilt. I am sure you will all get the idea from as much as I could fit in photographically. I really enjoyed working on this and love the final product.

and the back. A gorgeous wide back batik in blues. The back could practically pass for a whole cloth. Love the way the orange thread pops on it!

As always I look forward to you comments and will try to answer any questions you might have.

Wow is right! A real show-stopper! Fabulous craftsmanship and you did a wonderful job quilting! This is the kind of artistry that keeps me coming back to the Quilting Board. It's so inspiring and makes me want to challenge myself in my own work.

I've commented before that there should be a different term for what some people do and what I do. This is in a category by itself. I'll look for it in Houston!!
