OK everyone, I've pieced the topper for my piano as practice . That part went well. Apparently, sewing clothes translates at least a little bit to sewing straight lines for a quilt.

The problem is I can't seem to pin the front to the batting and backing tightly enough. What am I doing wrong?

Try taping the backing down (blue painter's tape works well). Then lay down the batting and top and tape them. Then pin at will.

I pinned for a long time than found basting spray. I think you would like it. It seems to work better than pinning for me.

That's something I still struggle with too. For me, I think it's easier if I hand baste it.

Thanks for the ideas. I guess I'll try taping first since I have tape here at the house. If that doesn't work, on to spray basting. If that doesn't work, I may be the owner of a slightly lumpy first try. Oh well. :D

Basting spray is SO fast and EASY - it makes putting the sandwich together a breeze. No more wrinkles on the back. Just be sure to smooth the bottom layer carefully - and I would still tape it - but not too tightly. Then spray & place the batting. DON't spray the batting - it can melt! Finally, lightly spray part of the back of the top at a time and press it down. Gradually work your way across until you have it all spray basted. You're ready to sew. The whole thing shouldn't take more than 10 minutes!
