Here's some pics of a quilt I finished last night. The pattern is called "Nine Patch Wonder" from the "Jelly Roll Quilts" book by Pam & Nicky Lintott. I used a jelly roll of "Fig and Plum" collection from Moda for the nine-patch blocks, and used some yardage I selected for the hourglass blocks, borders, backing, and binding.

While I was working on piecing the blocks, my youngest daughter, Olivia, remarked that she liked one particular fabric in it, so I decided to make the quilt hers when done. The hourglass blocks and the nine-patch blocks remind me of a checkerboard, hence the name I gave it. :) The overall size is 68" x 80".

The quilt in the book just had a square border, but I decied that I wanted to try a scalloped border since I hadn't done one yet. It took some calculating and figuring, but I managed and am pleased with how it looks. I think it probably took me maybe 2 extra hours of effort over a conventional square border since I had to figure and create a template and do the scalloped cuts, but I think it was worth the effort.

Love it! I especially like the scalloped edges. Nice colors and great piecing. And I see its REALLY complete cause you've also got your label attached. Nice work!

I love the idea and as usual am asking myself "why didn't I think of that?". You are very clever and I love the colors too. Good job!

Wow!!! Eddie you sure make some gorgeous quilts!!!! I still have not been brave enough to try a scalloped border. I really enjoy seeing what you have made, you are such an inspiration to us all!!!

Looks great! That's a really nice pattern too!

I did one with a wavy border and I did my figuring manually too. But I liked it so much, I bought the wavy ruler when it was 1/2 price (on sale $10). I haven't used the ruler yet, but have a quilt in the works that I plan to use it on. I figured it was worth the price since I know I'll use it. It was my first bias binding too (that was a trip)...I read several versions of directions, but didn't really "get" the instructions, so I kind of winged it. I have since found some directions that I understand, so I will try those when I finally get that one done.

Thanks for posting pics, you do such a nice job! :)

Yvonne 09-03-2009 04:56 PM

Eddie,
Your quilts are always a pleasure to look at. You do a great job and have a wonderful way with colors. Thanx for sharing. You have given me more ideas to consider, again!

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 09-03-2009 05:07 PM

The quilt is beautiful. And on a side note.......my husband is Ed and my daughter is Olivia. Odd coincidence, isn't it?

Eddie 09-03-2009 05:14 PM

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone. :)

It was actually surpisingly easy to do. I was afraid of messing it up, but once I got into it I found it was very easy. I think I'll be doing more of them. The main thing I found is that I have to go slower when stitching the binding on because I'm following a curve rather than simply straight stitching. Too, I cut my binding strips on the bias so that they would have some more stretch to them and follow the curve easier. And it really surprised me how much stretch there is in a bias edge! So I had to be careful not to pull on it but just let it flow along with the curve.

daisyboo9 09-03-2009 05:50 PM

oh your quilt turned out beautifully and the boarder is such a nice touch. I have the same book and have been eyeing the same quilt for a while now. I often wondered what the jelly roll you used looked like, so thank you so much for previewing it for me, cause I just might duplicate it!

wvdek 09-03-2009 06:37 PM

Good grief, NO! He is a manufacturing engineer. He thinks sewing is magic. The man can design an entire machine to produce precision parts by the zillions, yet thinks it's amazing for someone to whip up a skirt on a sewing machine. I guess we all have our talents. (And he does a all my math!)

tlrnhi 09-03-2009 10:10 PM

Beautiful!
I love the colors!
I think you need my address so you can send those lovelies. I promise to take good care of them! :)

Quilt4u 09-04-2009 02:01 AM

Wow!!! All your quilts are Beautiful.

key4unc 09-04-2009 03:11 AM

That is just gorgeous. The 2 extra hours were well worth the effort. And now that you've made that template, you can re-use it and it won't take as long the next time.

k3n 09-04-2009 03:19 AM

When I first looked, I thought you'd posted a photo from the book you mentioned!!!!   :D I had to go back and read again to see it wasa actually YOUR quilt. (BTW your photography is as great as your quilting.)

It's absolutely stunning Eddie and I love the scallopped border - gotta try that! And thanks for the tip on cutting the binding on the bias! :D

reneebobby 09-04-2009 03:21 AM

Iluv2quilt 09-04-2009 03:35 AM

Wow! Your little girl is going to love to snuggle up in that! You did a wonderful job on it. I especially like the scalloped borders.

Beautiful, meticulous work Eddie. I like the scalloped edge as well. Do you have a template that you cut it with or just free hand it?

Kyiav10 09-04-2009 05:30 AM
