10-Minute Block - Opinions Please

4 Attachment(s)
I've been working on this 10 minute block for the past couple of days. I started out with 10" squares, as the pattern called for, then decided it was way too big to get the desired result. So, this morning found me cutting all the squares down to 6", except the center floral square, which I've left at 10". I like it much better!

I'm questioning layouts...they all seem to look like baseball diamonds! lol I guess that's ok, since it will be going to a DGS and wife who are very outdoorsy people. Maybe it takes on a whole different facet once quilted? I guess ultimately, it's simply a matter of taste? My plan, at this point, is to use bright yellow that matches the yellow in the floral fabric for one of the borders, probably the border closest to all the blue edges. We'll see.

LOVE doing these blocks! They're very easy, and I plan to QAYG as much as possible to keep from having to manipulate the queen size on my home machine. I'll post an update with more photos as I get closer to finishing it.

Thanks for looking!

wow, love the affect you are getting

chairjogger 06-20-2012 12:24 PM

as you complete this top you will see more circles .. the baseball diamonds will have depth.. good luck ! like your colors. I have the flowered fabric myself for another project !!

nativetexan 06-20-2012 01:03 PM

oh yes, using a larger inset square does look better. great idea.

Diane007 06-20-2012 02:06 PM

Did you try making your square blocks smaller ...
just to see the difference?

QuiltnNan 06-20-2012 02:18 PM

i love the first one. the second one reminds me of a cartoon characters's legs and feet LOL

ShabbyTabby 06-20-2012 02:28 PM

I like the third one best. Love the colors...my bedroom has pale yellow walls and the quilt is in yellow and blue flowers so I kinda biased...lol.

QuilterMomma 06-20-2012 03:25 PM

I personally prefer the third one also.

Tweety2911 06-20-2012 03:28 PM

I also like the layout of the 3rd one. Very pretty choice of fabrics.

Maggie_Sue 06-20-2012 03:39 PM

Oh I love the 3rd one, great colors! My favorite!!!

I like the third one but I think any of them are going to look good. I also think a thin (1") yellow border would really frame it nicely. I hope you post pics when you get it finished.

Yes, Diane007. I started out with 10" squares and now have them at 6", but kept the focus block at 10". I like it much better now! The photos are of the 6" blocks. I was thinking I'd get this done really quickly by using the larger blocks, but bigger isn't always better! lol

Kelly, I'll definitely post photos when it's finished! I've already got eight more blocks done since my earlier post, so it's going very quickly, even with the smaller blocks. This one is quite easy to do.

I've seen some posts where people have had trouble with puckers when sewing the last seam with the focus block in it, but haven't run into that problem myself. I found that if I just push the inside of the focus block down, then pin the center seam, then put my finger into the fold of the focus block to position it, the rest of the block stays out of the way nicely.

I think the third one looks like the bow tie quilt block. Would be a quick way of making this pattern.

I vote for #1, too. I think these blocks are awesome & are going to make a beautiful quilt. I like your border ideas, too. Please post again when you get this all together, OK?

Arleners 06-21-2012 04:16 AM

I must agree with the majority - This quilt hits a home run!!!!!! I think once all the blocks are combined the baseball diamond effect will fade away. I like the look of # 1, but that calls for some fancy quilting IMHO. If you are planning on doing QAYG, I'd go for # 3 since your eye will accept the quilting lines not matching up with the alternating blocks.

i like the design

sewmorethings 06-21-2012 05:27 AM

It is going to be beautiful, i also like the layout of the third one

I like the 3rd the best!

starshine 06-21-2012 05:35 AM

I like the 3rd the best. Don't think I'd care for the 2nd one with continued blocks, 1 & 4 show how both would look together I think.

10 minute quilt blocks choices

I have made several of these, each quite different looking. For some I used jumbo yo-yos in the centers. You might try it using your yellow and blue fabric or even add some solid yellow yo-yos too.

Very nice, like the different lay outs, great job and thank you for sharing
Have a Blessed day

Each switch of the blocks gives you a different pattern. Have fun with it. I like the one where it splits the center circle into four pieces. Please show us what you finally decide to use. Thanks for sharing.

Stitchnripper 06-23-2012 02:16 PM

I love your blocks!!

frustratedquilter40 06-23-2012 02:21 PM

I love blue and yellow together . I like the 3rd one the best. I also have that blue and yellow flowered material . :)

Blue's quilting mama 06-23-2012 02:31 PM

My opinion is the third one.....love the fabric you used...

Jammin' Jane 09-13-2012 09:37 AM

Looks great! :)

DebbE 09-13-2012 08:04 PM

Absolutely the third one -- it will be wonderful all done!

Quilter 65 09-14-2012 02:42 PM

Lots of different looks. Blue and yellow always go well together.
