I don't know how to paper piece and tried to follow instructions on "EHow", think I have the jest of it. Umm then again, maybe not since my turtle looks like a turkey with a tail instead of feathers. I tried, that's what counts.

Any suggestions/links you have to better do this turtle is greatly appreciated!

Carol Doak has a great DVD on PP...you can probably find it on ebay or amazon...ck amazon first for a used one...cheaper and you'll only need to watch once. DVD's I find are easier then books...Did you do a google search or you tube search on free videos online to watch I'm sure there some out here...

Your turtle looks nice. You're so right, you did try. That so important and is a true learning experience. It's hard to determine from your picture which exact method you used. Don't throw your first attempt away but use it on a small pillow for yourself as a reminder where you began.

What you need to do is have at least two copies of your pattern for pp. One to keep as a map and the other to use to sew. In paper piecing you divide up the pattern in sections if necessary. You sew on the back side (without the pattern printed), then work around 1st section, then second section and so on. Then sew the sections together.

There's also EPP, English Paper Piecing. This is used with hand sewing the pieces together. In this method I like to draw on the back side of the fabric the seam lines for each piece. The seam allowance then is not as critical.

With your turtle it may prove easier to use an applique method using fusible.

There are several tutorials and threads on QB for review. Along with that there are numerous helps such as You Tube and websites and blogs for assistance.

Please keep asking questions and posting, that's how you learn.

Your turtle looks fine to me! He is very cute. Definitely does not look like a turkey! lol Just keep at it. Paper-piecing is not my forte but I have done a little of it. Practice makes perfect you know so just keep going.

I paper pieced 2 of these for mug rugs for my nephew and his son (my nephew's nickname is Slow as in he is always running behind schedule. he has a chain with a turtle on it that has a baby turtle inside to represent his son - so that's why I chose turtles). I decreased the size a bit to make a five inch square and centered them in the mug rugs. they were well received. the pattern was quite easy to follow.
