My quilt is sandwiched and ready for quilting.
Black scottie dogs on beige with red scotch plaid panelling.
I intended to machine quilt with beige thread in my needle and red thread in my shuttle to blend with the red backing.
I'm finding it so awkward to get my work in the sewing machine ( Yes, I know I can roll it up, I have cycle clips for the job) but the stitches aren't even so have decided to hand quilt.
My query is, do I hand quilt with beige thread which will show up on the plain red back or stitch-in-the-ditch with red thread on the top.?
Which thread is best for hand quilting?
I bought some Q/thread some time ago and noticed it is a little thicker than the Guttermans and yet size twelve q/needles are so fine.
I DO need advice as quick as poss please.
The quilt is intended for a Christmas gift.

I have heard grays blend in with most colors - maybe try a darker one- and silk is suppose to be good, but expensive.I also have a huge supply of Hand quilting thread from Coats and Clark

hmmm, you can use red thread in the plaid fabric areas. then if you really can't stand other color thread showing on the back, you could quilt just through the other areas down through the batting and not the backing. i think that is possible. if not, just go ahead and change your thread when necessary for the top. it's the top that is the most important anyway. the back will be fine.

Thanks for advice girls.
The batting I am using requires quilting 8 to 10 inches apart.
After studying the quilt I have decided to quilt the dogs' red collars with red and outline the red panels.
Since there are ten inches between panels and the collars are in the middle I am hoping this will be adequate.
How nice to be in touch with other like minded ladies.
I live in England where quilting isn't so popular.
