Antique Top I Bought at an Auction

1 Attachment(s)
I found this lovely old quilt top in an auction recently. I really wanted it because it is a glorious collection of old fabrics. I am so nostalgic about these fabrics! It's in perfect condition but if you look closely you will see 3 of the blocks have pieces that were put together the wrong way. I will be fixing them, eventually... Can you find them? ;o)

Even tho it's old, it was pieced by machine.

I sure do not see them.

0tis 03-26-2012 06:42 AM

Cute quilt - and yes, I found all three - look like easy fixes. Enjoy your new quilt.

usafchick1980 03-26-2012 06:43 AM

Yep I found them..but it took a while. I like this..very pretty

Crqltr 03-26-2012 06:44 AM

Very pretty blocks..I only found two mistakes! Went back and looked again and there it was! Good find tho!

Annie68 03-26-2012 06:51 AM

I really like that. I have a small collection of antique quilts, appreciate them very much.

I found the mistakes, I wouldn't redo anything. That's part of the charm of an old quilt, any mistakes just make it more charming, and redoing could take away from the value as it becomes older and more "antique"

: )

Very pretty, I did see all 3 blocks with peices turned the wrong way, which are not disastrous but I would fix if it were mine. It will be a minor job since it is not quilted. You have a keepsake there.

A very pretty quilt. You were lucky to have found it. If it were me, I wouldn't change the mistakes. They are part of the original maker's quilt and only add to it's charm.

luvstoquilt 03-26-2012 07:18 AM

My mother always made one block different when she placed them. She said all quilts need at least one "mistake". I am lucky that I still have her...she is 94 and a lot slower now but she is still here!

jaciqltznok 03-26-2012 07:35 AM

I love it! All those fabrics..what a collection!
Just remember once you put a single stitch into this as a quilt or "fixed" top, it is no longer vintage, but NEW.
You might also find that the bright red sashing is also not original to the era of the blocks. Often times the blocks would be passed down, someone would add the sashing and still NO quilt.
In any case, the mistakes are wonderful, I would leave them alone!

I love looking at old fabrics in quilts. I only found 2 mistakes. Beautiful quilt.

barny 03-26-2012 07:43 AM

I would too. People used to put a mistake on purpose.

My sentiments exactly. It's beautiful as is.

Maggiesmom 03-26-2012 07:59 AM

I certainly would not correct the blocks....that is the history of the quilt. Old quilts often had mistakes as do one's we often make. This just adds authenticity to the quilt. My personal opinion but Zone i believe a quilt historian would agree with.

bonitagaye 03-26-2012 08:09 AM

I found them, but I don't think I would fix them either!

Baloonatic 03-26-2012 08:19 AM

I found all three! What did I win?? :P

Quiltngolfer 03-26-2012 09:25 AM

I had to look for them, but I found them. I like the quilt too. Good find.

crafty pat 03-26-2012 09:38 AM

I love your quilt top. It looks like a easy fix if you want to do it.

GreatStarter 03-26-2012 10:27 AM

Great buy. Yes the mistakes are easy to find but why fix them-they are part of the history of the quilt?

joysewer 03-26-2012 10:33 AM

I found the mistakes and I would not change them either!!

valleyquiltermo 03-26-2012 10:35 AM

I found them no problem, Love the quilt, fix or not it is your top.

Halo 03-26-2012 10:44 AM

It was believed back then that you always put a flaw in a quilt. It would stop the Devil from fallowing the pattern , at night, to get to you. If the pattern was perfect, he could attack you while you slept. Therefor they always had a break in the pattern. For that reason, I would leave it as is. It is part of the history of that time. It is beautiful by the way.

suebee 03-26-2012 10:45 AM

I thought the same thing!

PurpleBecca 03-26-2012 11:20 AM

Gorgeous quilt. Fix if you have the inclination!! Who will ever know? I won't tell the ANTIQUE quilt police!!

Tweety2911 03-26-2012 11:44 AM

Beautiful assortment of fabrics in this quilt. Don't know much about the value and what modifications would do this antique. It is beautiful and one to treasure!

QUILTNMO 03-26-2012 11:51 AM

LindaMRB 03-26-2012 04:48 PM

I found the booboos!
What do I win???

;-)

I learned that a quilt is dated by the last time it was worked on--so if you fix it it's a current quilt. I love it and would not change a thing.

Jammin' Jane 03-27-2012 09:51 AM

Yes, I found them, but they should be easy to fix. Great quilt!
Thanks for saving it! :)

That could be true, Jacquie! The sashing is the one thing that doesn't seem to "fit". And whoever assembled the blocks with the sashing didn't do a great job-- didn't square up the blocks and also left them with similar blocks grouped together. If I decide to sell the top later, I won't change a thing. But if I decide to keep it and quilt it (which is more likely) then I will correct the piecing and perhaps even change the bright red sashing.

For me the appeal was the wonderful collection of fabrics. They are in great shape, but are much thinner than modern fabrics. It makes me wonder if they might have been hankerchiefs or something... Or maybe the fabric was just made thinner back then. This looks like a collection of fabric from the 1940's to me... Like some old aprons I have that were my mom's.

sweetpee 03-29-2012 05:34 AM

I found three mistakes and I would not change them. I feel it is okay for a mistake. Great Quilt.

mcdaniel023 03-29-2012 05:37 AM

I wouldn't change them either. Great find.

nena 03-29-2012 06:37 AM

I agree with Annie I would leave it as is. Adds charm
