Hi,
well here is the "new project". My grand dtr is absolutely horse crazy at age 11. Her birthday is in Oct. I found this panel the other day, so here is the question. Anyone have ideas as to how I could make this into a double bed size quilt? It measure 36 1/4" x 43 1/4". Would love to get your ideas------or would it be better to just do some simple borders and make it into a wall hanging?

I would pick some of the colors in panel and build around it!!! If you have the name on the selvage you can probably find coordinating fabric. You could use some borders that read solid and then some foilage etc. She would probably enjoy a wall hanging but as a grandma I would want to do a quilt so she could wrap herself in your love. You could always just do a throw - Kids are always lounging. lol

I agree with emsgrammy.

I think it would make a great center focus piece on a double bed. You'll have to decide if you want the rest of the quilt to be dark like the other colors or lighten it up. Also decide if you want the other fabric to be horse related or not. I would start with making some blocks, could be pieced blocks or just large squares, to add to the top and bottom to give it more length first before dealing with the width then work into expanding the over all size. Or you could decide on a just one fabric to add on to the length both ways so that the panel is centered and then the width, and add borders (drop down) from there. I can picture several ways to do this and would be fun. Making a scrappy D9P or scrappy yellow brick road pattern in the right colors for expanding the length both directions comes to mind also- would make it look more old fashion quilt design. The more I think of this the more ideas pop into my head. You'll have to maybe draw out a few ideas.

Build around it with colors that match.

I agree with making a bed quilt out of it. You've got some time to look for fabrics that can "lighten up" the overall look. Whatever you decide, I'm sure your dgd will love it!

I usually put a first border on that makes the panel an even number of inches plus seam allowance. Then just go on from there. A checkerboard with two blocks across is always a nice frame next and then just borders.

That is a gorgeous panel. Good luck. you will get lots of wonderful ideas. You can even combine parts from some of them. She will love it no matter what you do
