I am not feeling too confident on this baby quilt layout.:( I cut 6" squares from 7 different fabrics. I am trying to form some kind of pattern but it's offset due to only 6 rows wide; would 7 rows be better?? Do I need yet another fabric to add to this combination, another print perhaps?? I feel the green sticks out like a sore thumb :shock: I am not a fan of this shade of green. DD picked out that fabric, these are baby's colors for his room...

Sometimes random is the best pattern. Try laying out the fabric in diagonal rows if you have enough of each print to do that. Another thing you could do if you want to minimize the green is to do a disappearing 9 patch, using green for the middle squares in each block. They will end up 1/4 the size and if you lay it out right would create a nice pattern from the green squares. Just a thought!

I think that the colours and fabrics are lovely. Would it be better arranging them such that they form a more noticeable pattern? Diagonals? Rows? Perhaps after that you can add a few applique pieces? Just a thought? :thumbup: :thumbup:

Just had another thought! Scary! How about stitching 4 together, then adding sashing in the darker blue that is in one of the prints. Or even sashing between each block if you wanted. Either would look nice. The sashing would tie it all together and make it look less random I think.

I originally had it laid out that way, in a 4 patch and was going to put sashing around the 4 patch.... I have searched for that deeper blue to no avail. I was thinking that it might look better that way too.

I love the colors esp the green - just keep playing with it - sometimes I lay them out in a diagonal pattern sometimes not. You will know when you find what you like.

I think random would be just fine for these prints.

I think you're heading in the right direction...just keep playing with it. Here's another thought: Label each fabric 1 through 7 and consider arranging in a diamond shape (an odd number of columns would look more balanced). Row 1: 1 2 3 4 3 2 1, Row 2: 7 1 2 3 2 1 7; Row 3: 6 7 1 2 1 7 6, etc.
You could also use your least amount of fabric squares at the corners or diamond points. OR lay them out diagonally: r1) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7, r2) 7 1 2 3 4 5 6, r3) 6 7 1 2 3 4 5 etc.
Have fun! Whatever you do, I'm sure she will love it.

If you want the up and down pattern you were headed for, you do need another fabric. Can't have a center to make your turn with an even number. I think the green will be fine when it's stitched together. It's funny how stitching fabric together makes them match. I didn't like the gray in this runner, but it worked out.
