Balcony Blossoms - a quilt top
2 Attachment(s)
This quilt top was inspired by two of the classic 1930's style quilts - Double Wedding Ring, and Grandmother's Flower Garden, yet it does not have any curved piecing or hexagons. It does however, contain set-in-seams, which I forced myself to learn from a book. I used a different 1930's reproduction print for each flower. There is no commercial pattern.
This measures 48" x 48", and brings to mind a child's gift of flowers from her own yard for her mother. The good thing about this, according to my husband, is that my blocks using set-in-seams, do not look like padded bikini tops! (Many of mine have looked this way in the past!!!) |
Very pretty! It reminds me of Storm at Sea ... similar but different. Well done.

I love all the action you have created in this quilt. It is a wonderful pattern you compiled. I love the colors and how it feels like spring and summer flowers popping out. Bright and cheery. Great job. Very pretty quilt.

This is a really striking quilt!
Well, even though there are no curved seams, it does leave you with that effect. Good job!

Beautiful blocks, great fabrics, well done. I'm surprised you were able to learn Y seams from a book...there are free video and photo tutorials online including a great one Patrice did here on the board if anyone else is considering trying them out. |
Your quilt is beautiful.
Great fabrics and great design. |
Very nice! I can see the possibilities. If you made one piece from each side match in color you'd get a whole new view. Lovely..
ISN'T it funny, when we look long enough, we see different designs. I'm seeing what Chicca is seeing. Fabulous!
It's lovely Jenn. Love the soft colors and your pattern. So much movement with the circles.

From Quiltblocklibrary.com the block pattern called Greek Cross can be downloaded for $1. The block is not available on Quilters' cache. the value placement on the sample block makes it seem like it is very different from what I have made. There is a mistake on the pattern from Quilt block library. They give you the templates for the triangle (which I've used as the leaves), and the trapezoid (which I've used as the petals). However, they forgot to add a seam allowance to the trapezoid! You have to add it to that one template. Another good tip: you cut cut all four petals for each flower from a 10" square of fabric- good for those layer cakes. This quilt is 16 Greek Cross blocks with a special border that I figured would make the illusion of curves stronger, and the leaves pointier. Very good practice on Y-seams. I needed to do this before I start on something like a LeMoyne star or Mariner's Compass. |
Beautiful design and quilt!
Great design, please post again after quilting.
I love the illusion of waves when you look at it. It is a great pattern!
I really like your final product. Very pretty.
Wow, that is delightful. The pattern is lovely, the fabrics perfect for your creation.
It is so unusual and so pretty.
That is beautiful! It just undulates! And you are one brave lady to attempt set-in seams. I'd rather do curves all day every day rather than set in a single seam... LOL! Thanks for sharing this gem with us!
Absolutely gorgeous.
A very interesting design. Great colors.
Love the pattern! Your choice in fabric was perfect!
Very pretty, indeed! Looks like a Storm at Sea... I have a small one that is in a couple of colors, one just a hot pink that makes hearts... yours would too. Love it after a second look.
