Boom9-Pacific -- Blocks I've made--check back often :)

3 Attachment(s)
This will be a slow thread most likely as I make the blocks a few each week.

I joined the large Boomerang 9 Pacific group so I have 36 blocks to make in the next 4 months. They have to be a 12.5 x 12.5 (unfinished) block using a fat eighth mailed to me from 36 different people.

In turn, I mailed them a fat eighth that they will make a block for me and mail it back. Here's the fabric I mailed out for them to use. I'm going to make a surprise quilt for my Dad that lives with us. He is 82 and loves to help me by doing all the seam ironing and critique. He enjoys red so much that I couldn't resist. He loves all the blocks that come in and will be so surprised to find out they are made with him in mind.

Blocks will be added to the thread as I continue to make them.

Here's my first block I'm mailing back on Wednesday.

moonrise - sent the lovely teal and ivory floral that I matched with the teal & green/gold

roseirish48 - sent the fun turquoise background with "links" of bright colors that I matched with the funky flowers.

Hope they like these as Dad put his seal of approval on them before they were packed up.

Here's the "main" link to the thread where everyone is posting all the blocks they have received. You can browse through them if you wish to have a visual happy time. It might make you want to join the next boomerang that will come around in about 5 months.

Here's 3 more finished and ready to be sent home:

NanaKathy55 sent in the barn red with gold stars. She is looking for Americana...hope this fits.

Twinriversfarm just asked to use the colors in her floral fabric....I think it makes the black really pop.

Urgodschild2 asked for just white to be used with her wild Aussie fabric. My Dad was in love with this block when it was finished so I passed his QC test.

More to come later in the week...see y'all then :)

Phannie1 02-17-2013 07:14 PM

Those are all super great blocks.

joanelizbay 02-19-2013 08:20 AM

Thanks for the link to the one but when I saw "Paper Piecing" I cringed! I just cant get the hang of it yet...but I have seen that corner block made without paper piecing so I might try that technique. I love it!!! Its funny because it looks like several of us had the same idea about Twins fabric and added blue to it! I also think it makes it POP!

urgodschild2 02-19-2013 09:58 AM

Can't wait to get mine. It is gorgeous. Glad that it past Dad's test.

TheMamaHauser sent the batik and asked for plain black or plain white or both. Hoping she likes how this turned out.

Still a little crickety in my back so it's slow going -- leaning over and cutting isn't my "friend" right now. Don't lose hope, more (lots more, lol) are to come in the next few months.

quiltingmommy 02-20-2013 07:21 PM

Nice work. I need to make Mamahauser's block soon, I have had a mental block on what to do with her fabric, feeling a little bit uninspired. But seeing yours has helped, I think simple works for her fabric. Thanks

Okie dokie -- got 3 done this weekend between laundry and all the other fun stuff. Since Hubby is only home on weekends I really like to spend the time with him :o

ljdugas31 sent the black batik and asked for a plain bright color to be used with it. Well, I cut my first pieces wrong and had to improvise. This is what I came up with from 8 strips cut wrong. Think it almost looks like framed glass so Dad said it "worked out just fine". It wasn't a matter of measure twice and cut once..it was a matter of multiply correctly to come up with what you need..duh.

oldcatlady had the faded gray with swirly design fabric. I love pink with gray so it was great that she asked for grays, whites or light pinks to be used with her fabric. Can't wait to see all of her blocks together at the end.

travelinggramma had a solid black and asked for bright cheery colors. She mentioned she had liked an Amish style top so I tried to come up with a simple yet pleasingly bright block. It was paper pieced so it really wasn't as simple as I thought it would be when I picked out the pattern.

More to come next week so come on back and sit a spell :)

JuneBillie 02-24-2013 04:43 PM

Very pretty blocks.

Two for tomorrow to be mailed out :)

Joanelizbay sent the sunny yellow with floral swirlies. She asked for white or white on white on white with highlights of the bright yellow. Hope she likes the sunshine effect.

Abby's Mom sent what she called "plain boring black" and asked for a large floral...well this was the largest floral in my stash and dang it looked sharp to me and Dad.

Got 2 going home on Monday

Jaba sent the dainty cream floral with dancing butterflies.

Now then, LovingIzabella had a naughty streak in her. She sent this special fabric to a few of us as she was wanting a wall hanging. I'm not sure where she'll hang this but Dad & I racked our noggins but finally came up a design to high light her lingerie fabric. We decided to show it off front and center. Hope she likes our creation. It's pieced, appliqued, reverse appliqued and embroidered.

Two more went out the door on Monday 3/11

Phannie sent in a beautiful Red Oriental Rose fabric and asked to use the colors in her fabric.

Elizabrat sent in some tiny smiling pumpkins for her Halloween quilt. She asked for purples, oranges and "no spiders".... Hoping she likes this from us. Dad thought it was super bright and loved it.

lfstamper 03-11-2013 04:53 PM

Very nice blocks. Can't wait to see your dad's quilt...how wonderful to have him press for you!

Been awhile since I've posted a block... Hubby is having changes at work, gkids been sick and Dad's brother has cancer so we've been doing everything but sewing it seems.

Had a difficult time with this fabric...she only wanted white but it was a very focused print. Here's a picture of the fabric and of the block I ended up with. It actually didn't have a pattern, just "ideas" from other jar blocks. Hope Lestrong likes it.

Each label was around 3 1/2" each. If you cut them up, you'd lose the entire idea of the fabric.

Got to get sewing this week :)

Annz 03-24-2013 08:08 AM

Wow! These are all very nice.

Couple grown up blocks will head to the east on Wednesday...one to NH and one to Japan.

Marcialee sent in a cheery cherry colored f8 and asked for just white to be used.

Gaijin had a dainty blue floral and also asked for just white with it. She had sent a personalized note to Dad so he was in charge of her layout. He tried out 5 - 6 designs and decided upon this one. I think he did pretty good.

(The red background was just so the block would show up)

After a long time of no blocks (Took Dad to see his brother and then back to the funeral the next week, phew and I got sinus infection in between times), here is a block for Dahna42. She sent in the baseball fabric and asked for just the colors in the fabric to be used. I thought a diamond would work :)

Ok... 2 of them going home on the 9th of April.

Quiltingmommy sent a dark forest green and asked for white star shaped so it would look like a snowflake.

Dad said this would work:

Roseysue had a beautiful lilac flower print...Dad said it made him sneeze. I didn't want to lose the beauty of the flowers so we went with a simple D9P

mom-6 04-09-2013 07:58 PM

All your blocks are beautiful! Looks like lots of fun figuring out what to do with each individual fabric.

moonwork42029 04-10-2013 07:53 AM

MOM-6... you need to join up in the next Boomerang...it should start in June I think. They are a lot of fun and you get to see so much fabric you might never use otherwise.

finally 2 more to leave the house :)

AZKat sent "white" fabric and asked for the same tone of color be used in her block...ie, blue/blue, red/red so I used yellow/yellow as I didn't see that he had received any yellow as of yet. Hope she like the sunny block

Scrapper had a pleasing white with blue flowers on it and asked to use the colors in her fabric. We're (me and Dad) are liking this block for many different fabrics this time around. Hope she likes it too.

ArizonaKAT 04-14-2013 07:42 PM

YES! YELLOW! I have all my blocks pinned to the wall and just said the other day if I don't get any yellow I was going to make some myself to even out the colors. This is great!

Big mail out day for Monday 04/22 -- 5 blocks going home

Alikatt110 send a country tan with little flowers. She is going to donate her quilts to the victims of the fertilizer plant explosion. I hope this block brings comfort in some small way to someone in need.

Country1 had a fun button fabric -- the center block just cracks me up as I have a couple naughty cats at home.

Goldendog55 had jewel toned flowers that we oohed and ahhhed over. Dad thinks this is one of his favorite colored blocks we've made so far.

Missgigglewings had some wonderful butterflies hiding in her fabric. To help give them flight we chose a D9P.

OkDarla had a striped multicolor fabric and asked for just black with it. We think the black just makes the other colors pop wonderfully.

We might get more done this weekend but it is truly a glorious day outside and Dad wants to be out there.

Hope you like our blocks. They might not be ironed perfectly but Dad has enjoyed working on all of them so far.

OK...4 more going home on Monday 04/29

Cuppy wanted to use just creams or whites with her whirly cream design....hope she like this. To some the design is "swapped" around but Dad wanted to change up the "envelopes" in this one for a different design.

Dottie Dodge just asked to used the colors in her fabric but not navy. We went with a light hearted tan and think it worked out pretty nice.

Babyfire had a sparky purple with dots. She didn't have any special request so we found a happy print that made us smile for her block.

Navarre asked for the colors in her fabric to be used. The mellow yellow stripe and stony gray seemed to blend nicely with her fabric.

SewFarBehind 04-28-2013 06:40 PM

I'm enjoying your journey!

heather1949 04-29-2013 02:58 AM

Some nice blocks there.

moonwork42029 04-29-2013 05:47 AM

Thanks y'all :D It's always fun to use other people's fabrics and try to bring smiles to them.

Woo Hoo....the last 4 are going home!!!

Mosher was thinking summer with some watermelon fabric. She asked for tones of green as she was going to use them for placemats.

lovngrandma shared some bright red carnations with us. She just wanted us to have fun with her wide assortment of fabrics she mailed out. Here's what we came up with.

Girlscouts gave me a challenge with her hot pink with red and orange fabric. I hope she liked how this came out as we were pleasantly surprised how bright and pretty it looks to me and Dad.

Jaydee had the little kokopelli square to use for inspiration with her teal fabric. We found a couple great embroidery patterns and think it will blend great with her other blocks.

One f8 never showed up so if it shows up I'll do that block...if not, WE'RE DONE!!!!

Thanks for looking at all my blocks and hope they are enjoyed by all.
